Custom oscilloscope

Post by ganzziani »

Yes, I'm proposing making a design just for you guys. If there are 10 or more people willing to buy a unit, I will go ahead with the design. I am creating a poll to determine the specifications. Leave a comment if you think I am missing something.

I would love one of these in a drop-in, plug & play Dotcom format if the price was right.

Custom oscilloscope price

Post by ganzziani »

The price will depend on the specs, my first guess it that the price will be between $80.00 and $200.00.

Nice build, Richard

Post by wjhall »

I think this is our first post on this forum - odd - anyway - Will and I got mightily distracted from building this thing back in April - we turned our attention to our synth cases, etc. This is a really nice build, Richard. In fact, now that we're returning our attention to this thing, we figure we should pick your brain a bit.

Specifically, regarding the labeling of your panel - on Will's panel design, he just used generic labels for the momentary switches. You labeled them with functional names. We like that much better, but will they relate as well to the Function Generator aspect of the module? We're really quite naiive about it.

And then, this is a really stooopid question, but the toggle switch - you used an on-on-on. Could this be an on-off-on? We aren't sure.

By way of comment, we put "Dragonfly Alley" prominently on our panel 'cause it amused us to do so - not 'cause we're flagrant egotists <g>. We never considered far enough to think that others might want to use our design. That, bit should, of course, be taken off by whoever else is building the thing.

Thanks so much.

glad to see you here bill! and thanks again for the inspiration.

regarding the labelling, i took my best stab at it - don't know much about it either :despair: i was going to use it mainly as a scope so i wanted them labelled with something i understood instead of them being generic. i tend to forget things pretty quickly now that im old.

i asked gabriel to look at the FPD file to see if i got them labelled right and he said he'd get back to me. i can update the FPD file if there are any errors.

regarding the switch, yes its an on-off-on. oops.

on another note, anyone interested in a new scope should definitely vote. there's only 6 votes so far and he needs at least 10 - so go vote! i'd definitely get another.

i think perhaps having this on the diy page might bring more interest and more votes. having this available to just one format would be a mistake. just make it easier to diy and folks will make their own panels.

I voted for my wishes; if you still decide to make a 5U DotCom format I'll probably be your man !

I've built a couple of Frac/Euro size Oscope modules. One using the JYE scope and one using the Gabotronics scope. Gabriel will sell you the scope with the encoders, connectors, etc. not soldered which makes it easier to mount the stuff. I just ordered one of the Gabtronics MegaKits which is a dual channel scope which will go into my Steiner Synthasystem ressurection.

You can see photos of the scopes here:

http://www.xmission.com/~dingebre/Tellun.html

The one with the JYE scope has Dave Brown's and Scott Juskiw's A440 reference, headphone amp, and "beat" indicator. Thanks Dave and Scott!

I have .FPD files if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post them.

carynrich wrote:you're right, its a simple project if you don't separate the two pcbs. looks like david ingebretsen moved the BNC and RS-232 connectors to the front panel by splitting the PCBs and resoldering the pins with a ribbon cable - look at that ribbon cable soldering :hail: maybe his day job's a surgeon. with my luck i'd fuck it up.

That's exactly what I did. Gabriel sold me the PCBs disconnected as well as the encoders, etc. so no desoldering needed. I used the BNCs and RS232 to mount the one PCB to the panel and threaded holes on the display to mount that PCB to the panel.

I'm doing another one with the MegKit, dual trace. I'll post photos when done.

Nope, not surgeon, just a simple physicist :)

Did anything come of this in a commercially available 5U format?

My tax refund isn't going to spend itself!

There was a question on s-diy as to the lifetime of the displays, with the suggestion it might only be a couple of years. Any comment?
