Intellijel Rubicon and Ian Fritz Teezer TZFM duet

Post by numan7 »

 See (and listen) if you can guess which is which...

Both the Rubicon and the Teezer are among the nicest sounding modules in my kit; but there are some clear differences, especially at low fm-index and linear tz-fm amounts. And I don't have anything patched into the sync inputs of either VCO (so things get a bit more KLANG-orous towards the middle of the track than they need to be in a non-demo composition).

the audio is very raw - sine wave outputs from each module (normal sinusoid for the Rubicon), with both VCOs tuned with Initial Frequency all the way to the left, and FM dialed down to zero, then brought to a stop by rotating the Init Freq control towards the center until o-tool scope trace shows the flat-lines... in this particular recording (the one i liked the best out of a few that were made), one of the VCOs isn't quite at center. So that may be giving it a more tonal output at low index / fm-amount. But they sound rather close at higher index / fm-amount (see 1:40 - 2:10 or so).

For the melody I patched Maths-slewed Brains/Amem-pitch-sequenced Intellijel Dr Octature sinewaves into the TZFM inputs of the VCOs (aka, linear FM with AC coupling selected for the Teezer) and gradually turned up the linear FM control pots to create the melody. the VCOs (and Maths rise and fall parameters) were also being sequenced by the Brains. :cat:

...anyways i figured this should go here, since the Rubicon is Eurorack format, while the Teezer is 5U MOTM-format. Thus this seemed like the most logical place. :deadbanana:

:sb:

Quite the busy (and blurry) scope! There's a lot to hear in these VCOs.

Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison. I notice that at some points , eg 3:36, the waveforms are very different. I believe I could probably get either waveform from either module. So I have an idea which is which, but it would be just a guess.

Hi,

Dunno if it's too late for this but, do you still remember wich was wich? I might be interested in buying the one thats panned left in the video, it sounds more polite/cleaner to me. I think it's the rubicon, from other demos I've heard of it, but i could be wrong.

Thanks!

:hmm: hmm, i *think* i had the IF Teezer panned left on that one.... i have found that the Intellijel Rubicon goes a little further in its FM'ability; but the extra range tends to be somewhat wild and crazy sounding. :cookiemonster:

Thanks for your answer!

I guess I'll go for the teezer then, the vco on the right sounds a bit too harsh IMO. I like the metallic timbres you can get from through zero fm but on the right example it sounds somehow less "musical" -whatever that means- to me.

It reminds me of the difference between the new and the reissue Korg MS20s, the old ones are crazy but not actually harsh like the new ones when the filter is pushed, yet they're still quite xtreme sounding.
