exper, can you add details on if this update is still available?? i miss the sort of circular random voltages that the wogglebug spits out, as opposed to the digital quantized random from my nanorand.

This was a quite a while ago, now but I think if you search, there is a thread here about it. For the uScale 2 though, it had to be sent in to be updated, o don’t think there was a way for users to do it. But I can definitely say that the update fixed the glitchings/rapid trills, which were particularly apparent with the wogglebug.

Best thing to do is contact Intelljel’s support to see if it is still possible to update my I guess.

Yeah there was no publicly accessible update. Intellijel never publicly released a firmware update for the uScale for this or the shift B issue some people didn't like. I've always used it with a sequencer so never had a problem. It's a cool module and will be interesting to see if Intellijel release an improved version. Maybe it's a version with firmware changes released for cash. Firmware updates have never been Intellijel's strong point.

I strongly disagree. They've made a ton of updates for the Metropolis (bugs and features), Shifty (features), Plonk (bugs and features) , Tetrapad (bugs and features), Mutamix (bugs), Polaris (bugs), Rainmaker (bugs and features), uMIDI (bugs and features) and the Shapeshifter (bugs and tons of features).

Also, I should correct myself... the uScale firmware actually can be updated with the USB-ISP now, so I guess it does not need to be sent in anymore (unless there is a calibration needed). I just updated my Plonk to the new firmware which adds bitcrushing and saturation, and noticed that uScale is indeed in the menu options for updates...

Depends on your OS. I’m not interested in installing a Windows emulation to do a Shapeshifter update. None of my other modules require that and it annoys me. I thought their uScale support was weak. Mostly silent. On ER-301 for example I just copy the new OS onto the SD card and hit a couple of menu items. Same for Syntech. Easy. That is what a strong point looks like.

Please keep in mind that the Shapeshifter was made many years ago now. At the time of development the only FPGAs we could use for the project had this unfortunate limitation of a proprietary communication protocol (owned by intel iirc) and so you had to use their software. We understand this is not ideal but we have tried our best to make this easier via multiple step-by-step tutorials.
There were simply no other options other to have never made the Shapeshifter at all (or offer any updates). AFAIK there are no other Eurorack modules that use FPGAs (other than an upcoming XAOC module) plus did all the things the Shapeshifter could do.
If we were designing a new module like this you can be sure that we would be employing newer technologies that would facilitate easier firmware loading methods.

How so? uScale was developed eight years ago. There was debate on the functionality of Output B when in Scale Select mode but this was not a bug, just a design choice that was explained. Quite a few years ago we made some tweaks to the input filtering but there have been no other lingering bugs afaik.

Since the end of 2015 all of our modules released have had built in USB ports and we make a really easy to use windows/mac app that allows you to update your firmware with a USB cable.
Further to this we so far have two products that you can additionally manage presets using the excellent Laser Mammoth website (again with just a usb cable plugged in). Likewise you can also configure settings on the uMidi using USB and a web based app we created (linked on our site).

This January you will see three new digital modules released by us and all of them also have USB ports and easy update methods too.

So I am sorry if your impressions of our earliest work is not to your liking but I hope you will find that we have made a sincere effort to rectify this over the past years. :)

Thanks for taking the time to respond and your points are well noted. Maybe I was communicating a skewed opinion so my apologies. I guess it was just my frustration with the upgrade complexity of Shapeshifter. Please note I'm often praising your modules on this forum, regularly recommending for example Shapeshifter, Rubicon, Dixie and Linux to people asking for certain module types, so I wasn't out to do particular harm. :)

I’ve been having issues with mine lately (or maybe just quirks I just discovered) not sure if I should wait for v3 or try something else...
My main question is, is there a default setting that this shipped with? I can’t seem to get a unison mode, it’s mostly an octave up or a half step. IF I can somehow fiddle with the modes and get a unison, when I try and sweep pitches with something static like Maths output A will generally stay at its original pitch while B will move. At somepoint A will start to move and be some weird interval off. I may have just messed with the menues too much. Could someone tell me how to initialize it?
