Hi I'm a new member based in Liverpool UK and this is my first post but i've been lurking for a while so i know already that this place can be really helpful.
I've been getting slowly addicted to modular patching starting off with a doepfer 6u basic system earlier this year and i'm now ready to expand with another 6u case - i've just purchased a MATHS and an e560 at schneiders when in berlin recently so i've still got plenty of space to fill - any suggestions for someone who is interested in live improv (more abstract events rather than rigid sequencing - maybe like a slowed down derek bailey but using a synth rather than guitar) - interpret this as you seem fit
I've got a budget of around $2000 / £1250 on top of the maths and e560 any suggestions for how best to grow my system?
Hopefully this first post means that i can now use the search function so i'll find out soon if my question has been answered elsewhere many times before - if so please ignore the question and just treat it as a hello from a new member.
have you checked out post modular? they have some cool modules for performance type?
check this http://postmodular.co.uk/synthwerks
thats if your wanting performance stuff?
I know this is kind of turning it back on yourself but what do you want? More complex modulation sources? Different variety of VCOs/filters? Switch related modules would be useful for live and improv stuff I guess, like the A151 and the Malekko Switch. The synthwerks stuff does look cool as well although i'd imagine modules like these and things like the pressure points might be easier to play mounted in a skiff.
Guess you've got to think about what your lacking or what your thinking you need when patching, whether it be 'oh a cross modulating LFO with x function would be cool with these modules' or whatever. PlanB model 9 mixers have alot of cool routing options via switches so i'd imagine they'd be pretty cool in a live environment.
i guess I'm looking for performance oriented stuff or ways of evolving patches. I like using carefully layered and evolving patches which respond to touch sensitivity / keyboard splitting / aftertouch a bit like the layered synthetic sounds from this clip which i improvised using a patch i created on a Yamaha CS6x (the performance controls of which i'm having trouble thinking through in modular terms)
- i don't know what oscillators might be best for getting those kinds of sounds so suggestions would be appreciated. There's a touch of bit crushing going on in places there too but i've got a WMD geiger counter as a guitar pedal so i should be able to use that i think.
I'll check out postmodular regarding performance orientated gear too.
thanks polyroy and jake for replying and hello to you both from a noob
I'd look out for James Cigler's videos explaining the makenoise pressure points if you want touch sensitive stuff. Also James from synthwerks is a regular poster on the forum so i'm sure he'll be able to give you some great advice regarding his own products that are oriented for live performance. Don't think you could go wrong either products to be honest!
Crossfading modules as well if your after evolving stuff? Seems to be a Malekko crossfader in the works, Doepfer have a couple of different crossfading products, the PlanB model 14 has some nice crossfading functions as well as a bunch of others, although you'd have to get one second hand.
If your looking for different flavours of oscillators other than your bog standard A110s (which don't get me wrong, are good) you could check out some digital oscillators like the Hertz Donut, synthtech E340/E350 or just some more complex analog oscillators such as the livewire AFG, Malekko Anti-osc and others.
Plenty of things to try, just gotta see what takes your fancy function wise and sound wise.
