Here are a couple of my latest live tracks. These were recorded directly from my QU16 mixer onto a USB stick.

https://soundcloud.com/tedprice/723-jfa

https://soundcloud.com/tedprice/aug-02-kava-lounge-gig

Playing live with modular gear is ridiculously fun.

JFA is in-studio, the other track is live. They use the same setup. It's me on two Eurorack cases (18U) a drum machine, SH-101 and a Kaoss pad through my QU16 mixer. On the Kava gig I tried out my new ERM Multiclock that I picked up from PerfectCircuit the day before. This is from a monthly show called Fully Patched hosted by John Noble (Prettyhowtown - he's awesome). I pre-patch some sounds and melodic ideas and improvise from there.

I've been going to a monthly free improv workshop in Oakland called Doors That Only Open in Silence. The format is you set up your gear & put your name in the hat...trios (usually, sometimes quartets & duos) are chosen at random to play for 6-10 minutes. No rehearsal, prep, discussion, etc.

There's typically a good variety of instruments. This last week I had the good fortune to be paired up with these two gents:

That was fantastic. Really impressive with that format. Good listening between musicians.

Glad you did not draw the folks with accordion and marching cymbals. Although that might work too.

Great stuff. The idea of culture where I live is the Ronald Reagan library.

Thanks! There aren't a ton of free improv folks here at Muff's, I never know how this kind of thing is going to go over.

Funny fact: there actually was an accordion there that night. The guy was mostly a (fantastic) trap kit drummer...his band played a set between the two rounds of ad-hoc trios (that you can check out here. They reminded me of the Tin Hat Trio, but with extended improvisation.

The scene in Oakland is pretty fertile these days. Mills College has always brought in a steady stream of talent, but now it seems like there's new venues popping up every month. Might have something to do with all the tech bros pricing people out of San Francisco, moving the people that really make the Bay Area great to the east.

The lights are real, a friend does these with retroprojectors and liquids.
Hope you'll enjoy.

Had the first live rehearsal with my new project "Woofer" the other day, and I felt like sharing it with you:

https://soundcloud.com/woofermusic/woofer-live-set-1

Our setup is me on my modular system, and my partner on Ableton Live with a Push controller + he is controlling the mixer (Xone 4D). It is all synced up to a Beatstep Pro which is also my main sequencer.

Everything is improvised, no sounds have been planned beforehand. This is our concept for this project, and it is fun as hell, happy accidents and all.

Here's a recording of a performance I did November 20th 2015 in Portland, Oregon, USA. It was my first solo performance with my synth. I used my Serge format [mostly CGS] home-build modular + one effect [stereo memory man]. It was pretty loud and reverberant in there. The recording is direct from the mixer so I added some reverb, compression and eq after the fact.

I performed my second ever gig on Saturday, and my first where I was flying solo. It was only a 15 minute piece, but went over quite well I think!
I was performing as part of the Sonik night at the Luna Lounge in Leytonstone. There were four acts plus a DJ - a mixture of ambient and psychadelia that worked really well.

For my part - I created a track called "We Come in Peace"
It was pre-patched, re-patched at the venue, and then ad-libbed and wiggled.

The opening section is a slow 'viola solo' played on a 1024 BBD on full feedback being fed repeated bursts of white noise, controlled by a pressure controller - sort of Karplus Strong synthesis. The sound effects are a Springray small tank with feedback being filtered, controlled by a joystick.
The sequences are started at 6:30 - there are three: the five note theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, an 8 note sequence derived from 'Silent Night', and a 12 note sequence from 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. All of the sequences are mixed, summed, subtracted and switched, so they aren't all that obvious (until the end when two of them are more clearly heard).
The drums are filtered white noise, and some FM'd and Ring Modded outputs from the other oscillators.
The drone that runs the length of the piece was the Dark Energy, it was in tune at soundcheck but drifted in the meantime - I couldn't work out what had changed to fix it while playing - a little frustrating but no-one else noticed, or they thought it was intentionally microtonal :-)

I really enjoyed the experience - learned that I need to quickly recheck my tuning before starting, or learn to embrace microtonality a little more!

Hope you enjoy the wigglings of a relative beginner! :-)

There is a full recording of the gig taken direct from the mixer at my soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/ikjoyce/sonik-night-live-20151212
(Unfortunately Keenya seems to have had some stereo issues that were not noticeable on the night, and Strange Lights didn't mic up the guitars through the mixer, so their performance was MUCH louder and more impressive live - the recording really doesn't do them justice! )

My second ever show with the modular from the other week- first one videotaped too. By my next show, I'll have more costume stuff ready, and (hopefully!) at least one more module (the Sputnik Quad VCA/VCF).

I gotta get out and play some more gigs.

Great stuff, love a bit of free improv! The piece with the clarinet and percussion was also great - I love the sound of reeds/horns being explored/abused. One of my favourite records of recent times is John Butcher's Resonant Spaces - free improv sax in a selection of strange accoustic spaces in Scotland and the Orkneys, magic stuff!

Nice man. The crowd was into it. Didn't you just want to fire that big ole Waldorf up behind you?

Good to see Shawn got a place up and running.
