Yusynth Saw Animator... again

Post by voicetospirit »

OK So I have all the right parts, in all the right places, with all correct polarity... yet no sound :hmm: I'm not even getting the leds to light up.

Any suggestions?

When you say "all correct polarity", I'm going to assume that you triple-checked all of the connections and connectors, and are sure that the + and - LED tails are correctly attached (and that you tested the LEDs, too; a recent batch I got were all reversed!).

A few thoughts, then:

- Are you sure that you are getting power to the board? Time to break out the multimeter and start checking various spots on the board. Start at the power connector, then after the power caps (the black silos). After that, look up the IC's and find out which pins are supposed to be the recipients of power. Check there. But throughout all of it, make sure you don't get static'd up. It'd be a bad time to be rubbing balloons against your hair.

- I see you chose to go without DIP sockets for the IC's. Are you sure they are OK after soldering? If you've got an oscilliscope, this would help you check the inputs and outputs.

- Are you sure your I/O connectors are really nailed in? About 90% of the problems I encounter are connector issues and not circuit issues.

So there is a start. But I think doing some power tracking will be the best first 30 minutes to spend with this.

Not a lot to go on from this picture. Everything looks alright as far as I can tell. Do you have a DMM? You'll want to go over all the solder points and check that each component is making the connection it should to all other components it's connected to, and not making any it shouldn't. Also check for unwanted solder bridges - do this check with a magnifying glass - they can be really small. Also check all the wiring - put one probe on the back of the pcb where each wire connects, and the other on the panel component it connects to, and wiggle the wire and connection - make sure each one stays solidly connected no matter what. Triple check your power connections. Do you have a scanner? If so, disconnect everything, and scan both sides of the pcb and post it here - that way we'll be able to see each connection and part.

I suggest asking him on his EM forum:

Awesome; looks great!

Definitely on my want-to-build list.

Curiously these are the only that one cannot see on the photo of the PCB
