When nothing is plugged in to the CV in, the knobs act as attenuators for DC offset applied to that channel - hence a volume knob. So, you can use it as a mixer without the need of anything else. Lately, for a simple patch, I will mix with a few channels and take the SUM out and patch that back into an unused channel where I apply an envelope. The need for attenuators would be for the CV coming in.

thx, so the knobs works like a gain on the input when no cv is plugged?
i had understood that they works like a offset for the VCA, i.e. turning them cw will result in having VCA always opened. r

There is no gain or amplification. Think of this as a voltage controlled attenuator. So, yes, the offset will 'open' the vca resulting in unity output for that channel.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any module that fits this functionality into this space now that the intellijel has been discontinued? Was really planning on buying two of these but they're impossible to find now..

the ADDAC quintet mixing console seems pretty close.
i have a hexvca and love it for it's size but it's not a very great VCA... i wish it would close all the way but it doesn't and it clips in a fairly unpleasant way

I find a bit of clipping from the hexvca sounds quite good on kick drums. I only push it a bit though.

+1 for ADDAC 802 there's also the Befaco HexVCA, but it's DIY and a lot bigger.. the ADDAC 802 is just simply great, I'm considering getting a second one! (and yes, with reversed panel with the knobs at the bottom)

Wonderful thread... with just minutes left to bid on 1 of these on ebay I suddenly thought I'd better double check a few things. All answered now so thank you... I'm going in.... to probably miss out, but hopefully not! Back soon, once I have one. :)

Totally happy with my Linix, if it matters.

+1. It's bigger, but that's actually a plus as far as I'm concerned. Sounds great too.

I just sold my HexVCA and I feel like an idiot....I shoulda kept it just for what it was but once I traded by Mutamix, which really was a glorified channel mute, the HexVCA just seemed to small physically..
So I got a 4ms VCAM - will miss the HexVCA though - sounds bloody great...I hope the SSMs in the VCAM sound as good as the THATs
look up!

I just wish the Linix layout used the bigger knobs for CV levels and the small trimmers for bias (like the uVCA).

That definitely makes sense to me on the uVCA, but I actually like how the linix is set up, because you can use those offsets to mix if needed.

8 HP knobs for exponential to linear (log to ex would be even better) offset /level knobs
and a mix out or summing to the last output

Sadly I only have it on order and won't be able to build it for a while since my soldering iron needs replacing.

That's 12 knobs and 18 connectors in 8HP, which is pretty horrible in terms of ergonomics... The Zlob one is in 8HP, but it doesn't have adjustable response curve. If you're willing to compromise on HP, check out the Befaco Hexmix VCA, 14HP but with log to ex response curve and reasonable ergonomics.

hexamix looks great thanks for all the suggestions. right now i just bought two new modules a bia from noise engineering and a cinnamon bastl filter so i have to wait for money or finally sell the shit i dont use before i can afford the vca. maybe i will also get a external mixer first and see if i still need that vca that much. :help:
