Help Me with my next purchase !

Post by Synesthesia »

Hey guys,

my BDay is coming :)

so, here's My current system

I obsviously need a second VCO, and why not a LFO. I am on a tight budget. ( I wanted a OSC303 but i was to late, and I want a Vilfo, but i am not sure i will have the time to sort out the faceplate and stuff - I have to travel beginning of may )

- Currently I have a Sounds of Shadow barebone kit. Can you guys confirm that i won't blow it up under 15V ?

If I might, I will put it up for swap on the BST - trying to get a MU swap.

If it is safe, I will order a faceplate from the bridechamber, and to group my order, looking at another assembled module.

- The DoubleDeka Ultrasonic VCO : Jaysus ! this does look sexy !!!however, i haven't come across any of you guys with it ... any reason ? any feedback ?

- Buchla LPG - to itself, this module kept me into modular and pushed me to go 5U.

too many cool stuff to choose from ! :omg:

I would definitely get another oscillator, and as far as I know, dotcom offers the best bang for the buck (though I'm not the DIY type).

LPG: Well, the Megaohm CdS is damn good. I don't know if it sounds like a buchla or not, but it does sound great.

You have 4 spaces left, so I would recommend another Q106, a CdS, and a Megaohm LFO-Two, but all of those come assembled.

What's the budget?

I agree with fac - you need another oscillator. Sounds boring but believe me you will find new frontiers in hard/soft sync as well as melodic exercises with an additional oscillator. Q106 is difficult to top for the money but a ZO is pretty freaking cool. Consider a Modcan as well. There is a whole 'nuther sound realm there.

I asked about this in the FoH forum and flight said that there would be no issues with 15V. Having said that, I haven't built one myself (yet).

It's a very cool module and heaps of fun to play with (it also makes a great modulator given that you can play with the sliders as you're playing it). In my experience, it doesn't really do 'fat', but does great metallics and ambient sounds.
- Buchla LPG - to itself, this module kept me into modular and pushed me to go 5U.
I don't know whether Thomas White is still selling PCBs for LPGs, but I like his boards and they're fairly easy to put together.

Honestly I would get another EG, Noise, and a Pan/Fade (which you can also use as a VCA) before getting a 2nd VCO. I do agree another VCO is high up on the must-have list, though.

loop an EG and it can be a modulation source.
