MOTM case options and, of course, modules
I recently obtained an MOTM 900 power supply cheap from ebay. Now i'm looking for some rack options, like nice-racks.com has some good ones i think.
The main reason why i wanted to get MOTM, other than to expand from the Dotcom, is because it seems this format has some weird as hell modules.
any suggestions for both things mentioned?

as always, ewi tourcases make some awesome, sturdy and cheap to go cases but if you want some furniture i like the nice racks idea. as for modules, you will have be more specific than weird as hell. but off the top of my head i would recommend low pass gates, stg mankato and wavefolder and the entire modcan line (which fits happily in motm rails).

If you don't need an actual case, I've heard some good things about these racks, and they're cheap:

You'll still need rails. I guess these are the correct ones?:

What modules do you have in your system now?

Once Bridechamber stopped offering cases, I had my next one custom made here in Chicago. What a nightmare that turned out to be; cabinet makers are not used to the millimeter-precision these need.scarymcclary wrote:mainly case and module ideas. it seems motm is the way to go from the regular "bread and butter". i love bread and butter, but wanna throw some peanut butter on this business.
I had to pay a friend to rework it and build me two more for all (most) of my future expansion. One thing to keep in mind is that it's good to have the rail exceed the wood to which the module is attached. Some of those Bridechamber panels have double-ganged pots placed at the top and, as I hadn't accounted for that, I still maintain a separate rack.
Modulewise, MOTM is my bread-and-butter while the CGS, JH, Ian Fritz, etc. paneled behind BC panels make up the odds. But the noises I make are often fairly 'traditional' (still love a fat bass, there's often an identifiable lead, notes) so ymmv. Also, I super <3 my Zeroscillators.

I have all MOTM format. It's possible to DIY just about any module into it, if that's your idea. For cases, if you want the studio Moog look, the dot com cabinets plus rails is not too difficult. I think you can get these rails from Bridechamber. See my old page about the Synthesizers dot com cabinet conversion. And note how I mounted the MOTM-900 (and other Power One) supplies.

If you look around my site, you'll see my modified MOTM panel format that uses small knobs. It's still 5U MOTM size with 1/4-inch jacks, but more compact if you want to DIY it.

+1 on Nice-Racks. I have two cabinets from David and they are lovely. He is really flexible in design too.thermionicjunky wrote:I can recommend Nice-Racks. Don't be afraid of custom work. The prices are still reasonable.

Paul can do a really fast ship on just pieces parts like this - just control yourself, man! You might want to email him before ordering to be sure - he's in the process of moving and may not be able to ship as soon as you might like.relaxing wrote:To hijack the thread slightly, what's the quickest way to get an MOTM power cable?

I buy most of my power cables from Paul. They are well made and it saves me the work to assemble them.

And in my humble opinion, out of all the power cables I've had from Synth Tech, Modcan, Krisp1 and various DIY ones from second hand purchases, the Synth Tech power cables are the nicest!
(in terms of the nicest feeling/most flexible wire and dust caps included) Of course all the power cables I've had "work" perfectly fine (except for one DIY one that used smaller wire then the MTA connector was rated for), it's just the Synth Tech ones are the nicest to work with.
I make all of my own cables. You just have to match the cable thickness with the connector you buy. I only had one that didn't work and needed to be redone (out of 40 or more).
I spent a Hundred bucks on supplies when I started building my modular and just ran out of wire recently. That only would have bought me 10 cables I think.
