Distortion module

Post by HelloMellow »

Can some of you give me some advice for distortion modules in the 5U format? I'd really like some warm analogue distortion to my setup.

Not exactly distortion per se but the STG WaveFolder is nice. Jumpering the .com Q107 for hard clipping is nice too.

Possibly Oakley?

(I don't know why I'm answering this - I have zero to do with 5U!)

Trouby makes one, also.
Just because you are offended doesn't mean you are correct.

I am in the middle of a repanel project for converting my Turbo Rat pedal into a module. It has been a lot of fun and I learned a bunch about distortion types. I have the Wavefolder and the clipper rectifier from Dotcom and never use them for distortion.

The Dotcom clipper/rectifier is not great as a distortion module as it pulls down the signal strength during the process.

The Rat is the most dynamic and versatile distortion unit ever! Everything sounds good though it!

I've actually found out that I wanna get one of these or both:
Malekko Barker Assmaster
Dr.Scientist Frazz Drazzler

They sound amazing :)

Bryan: Maybe I'll do something similar! Could you please post some DIY or pics from your project? :D

Synthesizers.com Q118 Instrument Interface does a decent job.

Megaohm filters also distort nicely.

I really like the Oakley Overdrive module. It has two different settings, overdrive and distortion. The overdrive part can be really subtle and the distortion get raunchier. I like the overdrive to add a little grit and warmth.

Also works great with a bass guitar, gives it some more balls.

I will post pics as soon as I can. It is a blank panel with a bunch of switches, jacks and pots in it so far.

It will have a center off switch to allow germanium or Silicon diodes as well as another center off switch to allow red or white LED's. My favorite mod so far is also putting diodes into the distortion drive circuit, which as I read it makes it more like a Tube Screamer. I like the sounds I am getting when I test it out.

I agree with the above, the MegaOhm Delta filter can do some great distortion as well as other things. That filter is worth checking out for sure!

I just ordered a STG Signal Amp because it has a really nice, natural overdrive and will allow me to replace 2 Q108's.
