Dotcom, noice

Post by Putte »

I know the the distance between the power supply and the filter in dotcom modulars has been discussed before, but I can´t find that topic.
Now, I´m about to finish my hone built 22 space cabinett (2*11 spaces) and I will locate my Q150 as far from the QPS1 as possible, but there is one more thing I came to think of. Does it matter how the QPS1 is turned? Could the metal sheet side work as some kind of noice reduction towards the modules, if I turn it that way?
Perhaps a ridiculous question, and I could of coarse test it myself, but I wanted to hear your thoughts about it first.

I don't have the Q150 filter anymore but when I did I never noticed any noise in it. I do have two Q107 filters and both are a bit noisy. They are mounted in the far right of my .com studio 44 walnut cab with the PSU to the far left. The PSU is mounted by .com and I think it is mounted along the back. I could pop some modules out and take a pic of it if you want. I can live with the noise I get from this setup.

Here's the thing though -I very rarely have a filter as the last module in a chain, usually it's a VCA and that effectively kills all noise when the VCA is closed. The voltage levels going into the filter are high enough that I don't notice any noise when patched this way. So I wouldn't worry too much about this issue.

I have the same experience. The Q150 seems fine but hte Q107 is a bit more noisy. It will pick up oscillator noise regardless of where it is placed. This will occur even when nothing is patched. The use of a VCA after the filter effectively eliminates any noticeable noise. The noise level is relatively low and almost not an issue at normal output levels. If you are hearing noise then your gains are probably too low.

Tack, stryph!

No need to worry, then. Perhaps a stupid question, but how is the power supply supposed to affect the filters, if/when it does? Why just the filter?

Depending on how the circuits are constructed they are more or less prone to electrical interference through magnetic fields. PSU generate quite a bit of that and that's why some modules, usually stuff like spring reverb tanks, are best placed a bit away. Also, extra shielding may help the situation.

Btw Putte, I'm just an hour away from you if you ever wanna meet up.

Okey, guess I´ll see/hear when everything is in place and running. One option could be to put the filters in my second cabinet, when the first can be filled with other modules.
An hour away; Västerås, Karlstad? Absolutely, once my cabinets are finished and the little ones are working, I think it´d be great to get together.

Count me in if you want to get together. I work in Örebro - only got euro, but they are compatible...

Sure thing, would be nice to meet both of you! Västerås is the place but I have a car that takes a bit of modular if it has to :hihi:

Great, I´d love to test other kinds of modulars.
It seems, my modular will be easier to move than the 44 space + Q119 you´ve got, stryph. But, you never know how fast these things can grow (thinking of the value of the USD).

Either way is fine with me but I'd prefer a weekday over weekends.
