2011 SDIY CHALLENGE & GLOAT THREAD

Post by Luka »

Here we go for another year

This year i don't plan on doing much synth building but i have been completing a few things for an upcoming gig.

Currently finishing lfo and IO rack for my modular case
Harmonics module ( 2 wavefolders, Plague Bearer, Modulo Magic)

That's about all ill do this year

I finished these early in the year

Image
Another JH Krautrock phaser
And a JH Resonator

I am going to get vinyl labels for them - at the moment i just have a printout sitting on the box but it will be replaced once i get the chance to order the vinyl overlay.

For me in 2011--lots of Blacet modules, a few MOTM modules, 4x LPG's (why do I have to have 2 or 4 of everything?), and maybe a KLEE or two! Also, two more modular cabinets with assorted "weapons"!

Yep those pedals look amazing!

my plans so far for the home studio this year:

1 Ian Fritz Teezer thru zero Osc
2 Dual 281 Buchla clone
2 buchla 258 Clone
1 Sound of Shadows Barebones

I'm also about to start building a small suitcase modular for Live use. So far the vague plan is something like this:

2 MMM JP VCF's
1 CGS Real ring mod
1 CGS Utility ADSR
1 CGS Serge VCS
2 CGS VCA's
1 CGS Simple Wavefolder / or maybe the big one
1 Yusynth Random / S&H
2 MFOS Osc's and maybe 2 MFOS Lfo's as well
2 Mixers (1 for cv and 1 for audio)

I'll probably add a few more little utiltity function and stuff and try and fit the whole lot behind 1 shmick looking panel... Its definiltely going to be a challenge!

and if I can get all that built in the next 12 months I'll be very happy

I finished two JH units in December (Solina Chorus and Tau Phaser). They sound great on the Juno-6 :)

6u Rack Monosynth: JH Living VCOs, JH 36db VCF, EGs, LFOs & VCA

Tabletop Freakout Step Sequencer (in a former Tascam mixer case) consisting of the M185 sequencer and my homebrew "quantizer like no other"

MMT-8 rebuild (new case, new buttons)

Martinot-type ring controller

A four row 16 stage trigger sequencer for modular percussion

Many modules started that need finished:
YuSynth noise + S&H
CGS cynare, dual drum, lfo, quad step sequencer
JH more VCOs
ARP filter, SEM filter, CEM 3320 filter, LPG, etc etc etc

As soon as I finish row one of the coppersynth I'm going to start row two, which will likely include:

Chaquo (board is done)
Dual Plague Bearer (boards are done)
Triple Wavefolder (need to order BOM)
Attenuverting Mixer (need to order BOM)
Trapezoid VCA (need to order boards and BOM)
______ something else I think

I also want to build J3RK's 258 clone as well and Fonik's Triple Resonators.

Then I might work on more studio outboard stuff. :deadbanana:

I know! It was the first board I ever stuffed, but it got put in a drawer when I tried to get the first row done before touring (which never happened anyway). As soon as I can start etching again it's getting a panel and wired.

OK here's my new year's resolutions:

Bare PCBs:
Foniktronik VCPS-8
Rebote delay2.5
Small Clone Chorus
Wogglebug#3
Ian Fritz Jerkster
Ian Fritz ChaQuO
Ian Fritz TGTSH x 2
CGS Matrix Mixer
CGS Gated Comparator
CGS Power Supply Board
CGS Drum Simulator x 2
CGS Bi-N-Tic
CGS DUSG
Toppo's 281 x 2 (in the mail I suppose)

Stuffed PCBs
CGS Super Psycho Modulation Source
CGS VCS
CGS Stompbox Adapter

Stuffed PCB + panel ready, just hook it up, Niels (goddammit I just need some TIME! This will be over with soon, I promise)
JH Living VCOs

In between I think I'm going to try and build stuff for other people, for motivation sake. Let's see where this is actually going to lead, there WILL be gloating.

I had my first successful year last year. I finished my Buchla 291 and Fritz S&H and built a Music Easel Balanced Modulator/TWF and a Haible chorus. My goals for this year are:

16-stage Scott Stites MultiPhase

probably a Buchla 258 and Fritz Jerkster

perhaps a Music Easel Pulser

a handful of tube projects including a noise source, stereo amplifier, VCO and VCF

My resolutions:

Finish my Ultimate Expand-o-tron build (stuck mostly at woodworking stage).
Build my 5u cabinet

This is going to be complicated if we end up having to move this summer...

Nice lists guys, good luck :)

I am:
- Finishing two Oakley TM3030 303 clones.
- building a MyDIYCNC whenever it ships (hopefully early this year) and learning how to get PCBs and panels out of it, so I can...
- build a completely DIY eurorack modular and begin to design my own modules

Last 4 months or so I didn't do anything, but a few minor things. This year seems to start better.

Finished:
MFOS State Variable Filter
Thomas Henry XR VCO

Almost done:
MFOS S&H and VC Clock
Bartonmusic simple quantizer (just needs a xtal)

Projects to do this year:
Fonitronik attenuverting mixer (my 3rd, yay!)
VCOs (didn't decide which type will be my main VCOs, leaning to Oakley)
VCAs ( :vcas: don't know which yet. Can some of the manufacturers come out with a completely DIY Quad VCA? Would be awesome!)
Oakley ADSR
Ian Fritz ChaQuo
Ian Fritz AD/AR
And a filter, don't know which one yet, but again leaning to Oakley)

Now I run back to the modular to use my the today finished MFOS SVF.

I've got a Toppobrillo Buchla 281 in front of me, and after that a Blacet Time Machine.

After that, I'm thinking:

Oakley Deep Equinoxe
Yusynth VC Panner
Synth Tech E560 Morphing Terrarium

As slow as I am, that'll probably take me all year to finish. I still have a Klee sitting here, but I'm not sure whether I'll build or sell the parts.

Happy New Year!

My DIY plans for this year are pretty ambitious. For starters, I'm going to be adding pieces here and there to my Euro system all year. I've got a bunch of boards stuffed and currently waiting for panels, a few boards half-stuffed waiting for my next Mouser order, and several yet on my 'to-buy list.'

In addition to that, I've been building various Euro-format modules for a fellow Wiggler and should be doing some more of that here and there throughout the year. I really enjoy commission work for the variety of experience it brings and I'm looking forward to the various projects in store for me.

But the big project I have on the table is to make my '15v Euro' synth a reality. I ordered a Living VCO board last week to serve as the first module. The 5U forum was very helpful a couple of months ago in helping me with some module/direction choices, so I feel like I have a pretty solid game plan going forward, too. I don't know whether or not I'll manage to finish it in 2011, but I'm definitely going to get a good start. Plan is to house it all in a deep custom Goiks case.

I'm very happy to have this forum here to keep the fire lit under my ass... here's to a great 2011, wigglers.

I'm planning on doing less building and more using of modules this year. In (roughly) the last year I went from having no Frac modules to 8 full frames 75% of which is DIY.

I'm also saving for a trip the UK later in the year so I won't ave as much to squander on my modular. I dread to think how much I actually spent on DIY last year...

Cheers,

I just finished 2 JH Wavefolders - they sounds amazing. I added a offset control to each. The sound is a lot refined than the cgs wavemult. I like it a lot.

My goal this year is to finish my first synth panel (the panel arrived yesterday and I spent nearly 6 continuous hours just screwing in the hardware just to see what it will really look like--the pots are the wrong values but everything else is probably OK with a few exceptions), and then to complete the second very similar panel, and one 2U panel to complete my first 12U EWI Tourcase....oh....and buy a new camera, as mine really, really blows!

Here's the first panel with all the hardware except 8 3mm LEDs (2 for each Bus line and 4 for the VCEG):
Image

And here it is in its case...this was a test to make sure I hadn't put some components too close to the mounting rails. No problemo!
Image

From left to right the components (PCB mounting bracket and all wiring yet to be done) are:
2 CV/Gate/Trig/Glide bus lines
VCO1 (CEM 3340 based on a PAiA modified by Digisound design, plus Sine shaper)
4:1 Mixer (CSG04 DC Mixer, normalized to mix VCO1's wave forms)
VCO2 (as above but with a Ramp shaper instead of Sine)
4:1 Mixer (as above, except normalized to mix VCO2)
VCF1 & VCF2 (CEM 3320, PAiA design modified so each pole can switch between Lo, All and Hi pass)
Multiple (below the VCF section)
VCEG (CEM3310, PAiA design with CV for Sustain added)
ADSR (CEM3310, PAiA without the CV part)
VCA1 & VCA2 (CEM 3330 dual VCA, PAiA design, modified only with switches to select AC/DC and Exp/Lin)

Extensive normalization will be used behind the panel, but switched jacks are being used so all that can be bypassed. And each module has switches to select between routing of the 2 Bus lines.

The 2 glide circuits only work with the 2 CV Bus line inputs. Didn't have room for in/out jacks for them so if they're to be used, I'll have to use the CV ins on the Bus lines.

The second panel might be identical to this, or I might replace the VCF sectin with some LPG or VCLFO modules.

The third panel, a 2U high one, will have 1 Yusynth Noise/S&H, 2 Barton Musical Circuits Simple Quantizers, 2 LFO (well, one CGS Utility LFO), and 2 Ring Modulators (one Fonik VC RM and one CGS RRM).
