Some early specs:
  • 8hp
  • Fully linear regulation (not switchmode), so no added clock ripple on voltage rails.
  • Power capacity: 1.5A each rail. *See below
  • Tested good so far: 6 hours constant load of 752mA. Heat measured at heat sinks stabilized at 176°F/80.2°C.
  • Accepts both 2x8 box connectors and 0.25"/6.35mm quick connects for power in and out.
  • Outputs from ~±10.5V down to zero.
*Tested good at 1.5A draw on each rail. Voltage droop with current ratio increases above 1A, but that's not a bad thing for starvation. Peak temperatures recorded in open air setup: 215°F/102°C, measurement taken at regulator. Max starvation output voltage at 1.5A draw: +8.5V/-9.5V.

Out of curiosity, what sorts of modules do people find do cool things with power starving?

I've played with it a bit in the realm of pedals. Built a little passive, single-knob voltage starve unit, and just tried plugging it into various effects. Tends to do interesting things with some fuzz and distortion effects, and not a whole lot in between 'sounds normal' and 'turned off' on most other types of stuff.

I've been testing the Famine (beta release) with greats results on a busboard powering 6 analog modules via just the V+ knob. You can use knobs, jacks, and power starvation switches to alter all of the connected modules... works nicely when your starved modules are sending control voltages and audio to other gear. So far I've found great results:

- Starving an entire busboard of modules.
- Using starved modules to control external gear.
- Controlling Famine from external gear.

I've also found Famine to be a nice pairing for the complex Infernal Noise Machine. You can use starvation to skip sections of INM and just focus on the noise core or an oscillator by giving just enough power to generate an audible tone. This helps in discovering and accentuating dynamics. These methods can also pair well with the upcoming Sinner module, since it allows for subtle shaping, ducking, and other forms of control.

Depending on the module, finding Famine has a fair bit of range. Useful for anything from pitch effects to glitchy madness.

Here’s an awkward video of this terrifying module in action with a Neutron, Plague Bearer and Delay V2.

I'll start taking preorders for the 1500 in April, the 500 and 250 likely not till June; They still need prototyping and parts sourcing is getting tricky of late.

Super exciting. Looking forward to the messed up noises people accomplish with Famine.

If there is a module with more warning labels on it, I can’t think of it...but I probably want that too.

The sticker and shirt designs look great, too.

Added a five-part video to the top post, using Famine on a Sound of Shadows v3 to get some interesting sounds with no input.

Famine plus sound of shadows has to be one of the most fun combinations in euro…it’s like the glitchy noise equivalent of rings into clouds.

All in for a DIY kit and shirt order. Been eyeing that ADDAC 300 for a minute but the power cap for this is MUCH better.

Very soon and, whatever you're expecting, it isn't.

And the last one for now - Famine and IMP. This one is more of a tutorial than the others, mostly.
