Can the ADR30 was built *without* the SREIO socket board?
ie. is there any circuitry on the SREIO (besides the anti-thump) that is necessary to its functioning?

Yes. Bear in mind that the I/O connector on the ADR30 is designed for a 0.1" IDC boxed header which is a little small to be soldering flying wires onto. It's no worse than soldering to stripboard though.
