I was sequencing the Model D and trying to use the Voyager stacked with the Moslab to generate a pad. This was the result.

5U modular and Eurorack modular. The Instruo Harmonaig and Q960 sequencer combine to control pitch, voicing and inversion for four Q106 oscillators. The SSL octal vca & expander are triggered by a Turing Machine pulse generator for the rapid strumming chords. A dove WTF vco is the root whole note downbeat pluck. Other waveforms from the four vco's are sent to the Segwencer for the rolling legato arpeggio and the celestial string chords are PWM waves through the Empress reverb in Ghost mode. The opening clangerous sounds and chirping are the MI Rings, Makenoise Mysteron and a patch from the 5U through a frequency shifter and digital delay flanger. The System 8 is the upper arpeggio part and the Deepmind 12 is the sustain strings. The Matriarch doubles on bass and the main melodic part.

Recorded in real time to Cubase and video edited in Final Cut Pro.

The fun part was using the four Q106's to create three distinct parts. The main percussive guitar pluck sounding sequence, the legato arpeggio (heard especially at the end) and the ghostly string chords through the Empress reverb. I just tapped the sawtooth waves for the percussion part, the triangle waves for the legato arp portion and the PWM waves for the strings part. Of course lots of routing, mixing and envelope control made it happen correctly. Love those Synthetic Sound Labs modules for all that!

Doombient 5U sequence

Post by kindredlost »

Doombient modular drone sequence.
STG Soundlabs and Dove Audio oscillators with the STG Wave Folder and Wave Slicer for building timbre. Only filters used were the STG Post Lawsuit JP and Q107 dotcom State Variable in High Pass mode. These were used for the ring mod clang (Oakley Sound Systems Ring Modulator) and the high resonant chirping noise from the Sputnik WCRS.
Two sequencers used were the Q960 and STG Voltage Mini Store.
Effects were from the Haible Tau Pipe Phaser, Behringer DD400 digital delay, EHX Grand Canyon Looper, Strymon Blue Sky, Empress Reverb (Ghost Blue) and EchoFix tape delay.
The Looper recorded the first few steps of the STG VMS and runs continuously throughout the piece.
The Dove Audio WTF and Waveplane provide more than one of the sound elements. One is a back window tap from the WTF for the brighter swell and the sub octave from the Waveplane for the deep bass. These are periodically added with the Synthetic Sound Labs Seqwencer IV module. The module status and outboard taps are accessed via the excellent Dave Holiday auxiliary module.
The oscilloscope view is of the final Wave Slicer bass line output.
Recorded in real time to a single stereo track in Cubase. Video edited in Final Cut Pro.

Thanks Kip. You're sure getting a lot of mileage out of those wave folders. Cool patches!

I'm not certain how available the Oakley RM is now. I bought mine from Paul at krisp1 but it appears he is out of stock and Tony doesn't list boards on his site either. I wonder if it's out of production now? As compared to the dotcom Ring Modulator and the Ken Stone Real Ring Modulator, I like the Oakley the best.

I have the MFOS Ring Mod and Its fine but doesn't sing like my 2600 so I'm hunting for that.

Because Im so late to starting a 5u system I have a growing list of modules I discover and have to start hunting down because they are no longer available.

The old Ring Mod, in both the MOTM and Eurorack/Frac versions, was discontinued some years ago. The current Classic VCA and Discontinuity both have a ring modulator function but neither behave in quite the same way as the dedicated module.

Once the current semiconductor shortage settles down I may well look at introducing a new MU version.

Bit of an epic here, but I wanted to see how much I could squeeze out the Modular, and how much I can coax the Carbon Sequencer to provide enough variation in terms of melody and rhythm.

good workout for the Corsynth DR-03 and a chance to use a few pedals from the back of the cupboard.

I just found this video of JLR doing a modular breakdown. It's not even a day old (at this writing)

Actually it's based on the ARP Oddysey ring modulator. This RM uses XOR gates and it only outputs square waves. A similar RM can be found in the korg MS20

good one JLR.
It also reminds me of Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna".
Very dreamy & cosmic.

For fun . . . a test after some module rearranging. Frère Jacques is a fairly perfect 'round' to try with the combination of a Moon 569 sequencer + 564 switch since the tune has 4 distinct lines that repeat twice before going to the next one.

That's pretty cool John. I might try the patch using the Dr. Sketch-N-Etch ASR.
The CGS ASR is a bit less stable but that might make it even more horror-show fun too.
A creepy version is in order.
