I’d say that Cs-L count as two oscillators and Rings counts too.kamindustries wrote:Two "traditional" in 208hp: Cs-L and Plaits, so 18%.
If you count Rings, that would bring it up to 22%
How many oscillators?
In 372hp I have 3 "pure" VCOs - mangrove, 2hp voice and plaits
...but I have a *^&%-ton of voices and percussion modules
* Tonestar 8106
* BIA
* Acidlab m303
* SSF Bass
* DFAM
Is my ratio too high? I'm wondering that, but I have enough modulation and sequence easily enough for my desired purposes, and don't need it all running at once since that's not how I write stuff. Gigging I'll use 2-3x voices in 168hp + digitakt.

How do you answer this question accurately?
I think it would be better to ask how many sound outputs per hp.
Verbos HO has a whole bunch of vcas, so it may make more sense to think of it as potential multiple sound sources.
Complex oscillators are either 1 or 2 depending on how you use them, without even getting into all the crazy taps on the Cs-L, for example.

648HP
224HP=VCO, drum voices, Elements, Nebulae and 3 TT Ones.
Can't have too many sound sources especially if you are incorporating drums as well into your rig

I’ve got a Furthrrrr generator, Plaits, Rings and SMR (new for me so I haven’t used it that much yet) in 292hp. Plus Morphagene and a self oscillating filter now and then.
But I could manage by just using Rings and Plaits as sound sources actually. It all depends on how smart I’ve been in the patch.

3-4 HM VCOs in my 104HP (I swap one out for additive stuff sometimes), for a total of 17-23%, plus up to 4 digital oscillators in Yarns. I could let everything else go if I really had to.

2 Plaits
2 Braids
2 Dixie 2+
2 Pittsburgh Waveforms
2 Rings
2 Mysteron
Tides I
Rubicon I
Telharmonic
PICO Voice
Sync Iter
Tiptop Z-3000
STO
O-111 vco 4 (Ladik)
DPO
E-330
.
plus Elements, BIA, Synthrotek DS-M, Akemies Taiko, Plonk, Chimera and also Tiptop one, Radio music and Chord organ.
So ~20 oscillators plus , but this is in about 2000hp.
And of course plus the so called drum oscillators and sample players.
And I consider Elements, Synthrotek DS-M, Akemies Taiko, Chimera, and plonk to be voices but maybe not oscillators per say.
So, I guess I will need to buy a few more oscillators

EDIT; added STO, DPO, Ladik O-111 vco-4, 2nd Mysteron and Synthesis Tech E-330

Such oscillation. Many voltage. So waves.
Too many. Halp!
E352, shapey, plaits, braids, Ladik 210, STO, M32, Pico voice.
Kinda sorta: rings, disting.
2x filters that will track OK.
BIA. Pico drum.
So, um 14 max, realistically, 8 plus drums.
E370 soon when its available retail.
Few things that will go audio rate, not counting em. ( A143-1 drones FTW )
672hp. Spreading to a spare 168 Hp case soon. Don’t want to think about the % ( how would you count M32 anyways) at least 30 %, possibly closer to 40 or even pushing 50

just got my E370 after a long wait, and now i realize i went overboard in total. seriously have to re-think what has to go. total of 444hp in two cases (208+236), plus aprox 100hp in modules that aren't in a case atm, and my 17 oscillators are:
J3RK 258J (2)
Dixie 1
Endorphin FG (2)
A110-4 (2)
Hertz Donut 1 (2)
Hertz Donut 2 (2)
Synthtech E350 (2)
Synthtech E370 (4)
i know i'm keeping 258J and FG in any scenario. for the rest, we'll see after i catch time for some testing (e370 is still unpacked.. )

956 HP - VCO's 101 HP (three double as VCLFO's)*. I really think of it as 90 HP (less Dixie and Sine).
Sputnik Dual VCO
Sputnik VCO (x2)
Makenoise STO
Malekko Richter VCO II*
Erica Black Wavetable VCO
Intellijel Dixie II +*
Hikari Sine*
I rarely use the VCO II as an LFO. I seldom use the Dixie as a VCO. I only use the Sine as a VCO for FM duties on the Erica Wave VCO.
I love modular.

Re: How many oscillators?
Would it be easier to think of them as complete 'voices' when deciding what to keep and what to let go?insoul8 wrote:How many traditional oscillators do you have vs. total hp?
It made it easier for me. Not sure if it would be for others.
I define a voice as VCO(s)/VCA. It does not have to contain anything else. Then I put it in the smallest HP possible. This is how I build a 'custom voice'.
TRISPECTRUM 48HP , three OSC's three VCA's.

Past that point it starts to get fuzzy. The one I am currently working on has four CEM3340 VCO's, four waveshapers, four VCA's and a joystick in 70HP. That becomes a silly sized panel though
Trying hard to smash down the HP usage, but it becomes pretty challenging.

Got the Make Noise ST-O in my system. Typically I'm pairing it with Three Sisters. And typically it's my main low-end/bass-line. Have done some experimentation with bringing it higher.cllpse wrote:2 x Make Noise Skiffs. I've got an Akemie's Taiko (using it as a synth voice mostly), Mutable Instruments Plaits and Mutable Instruments Clouds running Parasite firmware for an extra voice in a pinch. It's still not quite enough. I'm looking at a filter and a Make Noise ST-O to have "enough going on".
This basically free's up Clouds and Akemie's Taiko to do their thing, and the ST-O together with Plaits, combined with Strymon Magneto makes for a ton of melody.
