I've taken to simplifying my project synth, so I'm another one on the downsizing bus. I'm surprised at how inspiring the new 3 vco configuration is (changed from 4 vcos) and how it's made me totally rethink nearly every approach. Well, the lack of cash also played a large part in this reconfiguration. All I know is that I seem to be much happier with the latest reconfig as it's allowing me to utilize more of the real time controllers I've collected. Yay ... er sumthin. At least this way I'll have the money to complete the Dual Filter panel (that giant empty silver panel in the upper row) and perhaps even buy me 2 VCAs to put in that 2MU placeholder on the bottom right!

5U isn't dead. At least not in my shop it's not. This silly project synth of mine, I've got roughly two of every Dot Com pcb used in the project ... tested and carefully stored as "spares on hand". Part of what allowed me to decide to do the project in the first place was ready availability of the core PCBs (either used or new) and the relative ease with which those core circuits can be changed-out with a tested/working board in less than 30 minutes (partly thanks to removable rear cabinet panels). Anyhow, 5U (that is to say Dot Com 5U) isn't anywhere near the graveyard 'round here.

I've tried to imagine doing something similar based on Euro modules. Pffft ... not happening. FAR too much work. Fageddabowdit.

I think those are probably just crops that are grown in a circle because the water sprinkling system is mounted in the center and pivots 360 degrees. 🤓

Now how did a city boy from the Pacific North West of the US know about circular irrigation? Dang, as is said in LEO crowds .. "good obs" (short for "good observation") JLR!

As John correctly said, those are circular fields that use a radial irrigation system. Some farmers say it's a more efficient use of land and water, some farmers disagree with that. It's easier to irrigate and harvest fields shaped like that, however there is an up-front investment in equipment to get started with that system that can be prohibitive.

Dang city boy ... whoda thunk it ... (jk John, you know I love ya).

Also, anyone spot the US Border Patrol light aircraft in that picture? White, single engine, high-wing airplane, roughly center of the image, traveling eastward. It's pretty small so look carefully. Just to the right of that green line I drew.

:hihi: I often observe and retain an odd assortment of information. Actually we doo have a LOT of agriculture going on here in WA state, maybe a majority is on the Eastern side of the Cascade mountain range but on the Western side where I'm at there is a fair amount, especially in Puyallup which is less than 30 miles away from me. I'm guessing most of the circular farms are in Eastern WA since there is a lot more open flat land there.

5U is an undead format. It will last forever, can be quite stylish, but requires regular blood sacrifices.

I love the stuff. I only use other format(s) when I can't afford money/cab-space.

And yes my head does come to a nub. In 7th grade kids used to tease me about "growing a horn" on the top of me noggin.

I presume this first requires having hair? I think, that may answer your question.

5u lives on! It's just a bald guy with a soldering iron, and definitely not this guy :ponytail: , that was like, decades of hairlines ago

Ahaha, admittedly, the only reason I know about what those are - is simply from having traveled on airplanes enough times. Someone inevitably asks "what are those?"

Today I put away the 2600 and brought the 5U back out (I don't have room for both in my studio atm). It'll never be dead to me but my 14 y/o has zero interest, it's just another one of my annoying noise makers to her haha

Is 5U dying?

It doesn't have to be.

I feel like 5U is the "grown man instrument" that appeals to actual musicians. The "Harley" of modular.
