Yup, this is good advice, coming from someone who tried to setup a working acid voice (VCF-303/Seq1 based): you can do it and you can get it pretty close (in most patches it was mostly acceptably close for me) but it's a huge pita compared to flipping the switch on the Avalon and just going to work. For me the modular workflow was at odds with what I was used to accomplishing otherwise. And I don't generally feel that way about my modular (I use it for lots of other things quite happily).nickbaba wrote:my 2 cents - don't bother trying to create an acid setup in euro. waste of effort and money when there are better stand-alone instruments available for what you will end up spending.
maybe look at something like one of the the acidlab drum machines and the abstrakt avalon...? you get real analog sounds plus your midi/cv, audio outs etc built-in.
personally I never rated the sound of the x0x type clones, so I wouldn't recommend that route myself, but ymmv.
So yeah, I'd say the Avalon or the RE-303 are the two I'd be considering now (in fact I'm probably ordering an Avalon this weekend).
I agree that a dedicated module is a better plan, because a lot of the DNA of acid is linked to the nature of the hardware. Getting a close sound isn't too difficult, but getting the 'spirit' of acid is another matter.
Of course you could argue that the spirit of acid lies in not letting hardware options or limitations slow you down...
Nevertheless, sticking to Eurorack I see nobody has mentioned Ripples yet, which I think is great for giving a Roland flavour - more 101/202 than 303, but still very usable and inspiring.

i think the sequencer is going to be pretty important, and to me the stepper acid looks great for acid in euro. i have a din sync vcf303 and kind of wish i had a stepper acid and a din sync osc303 to have a sort of euro 303 clone. i don't see how it could be any less good than a dedicated hardware, because i would also have the ability of mixing in other oscs or any kind of sound source.
you sure about this? i mean, even the osc303? i haven't been able to find any info on that one that's more recent than 2012 on their website and no mentions of a kit for that one anywhere ever. i'd be all over that.kwaidan wrote:The Din Sync 303 modules are now DIY. Even though I'm happy with my Acidlab M303, I still may build them.
Scarkord beat me to the punch.
Yeah, Modular Addict has the filter and VCO kits. Also, you can buy a VCO module from Acidlab.cupwise wrote:i think the sequencer is going to be pretty important, and to me the stepper acid looks great for acid in euro. i have a din sync vcf303 and kind of wish i had a stepper acid and a din sync osc303 to have a sort of euro 303 clone. i don't see how it could be any less good than a dedicated hardware, because i would also have the ability of mixing in other oscs or any kind of sound source.
