What is your end goal?

Anything modular synth-related that is not format-specific.

Journey? Goal?

My story is also similar, bands using electronic instruments in the 90's to acoustic electronic hybrid projects last 15 years.

I have three end goals with modular.

Time travel: maybe sounds strange but I fell in love with synths when I was a kid listening to public radio. Berlin School, prog rock and early ambient. It has a dream since then to explore synths more deeply.

Improvisation: most of what we do is very preplanned and composed, while our acoustic music is more improvisation and based on ethnic improvisation traditions. I want to see what I can do with synths creating sounds and pieces from the ground up, live.

Fun: I just want to enjoy obsessing over ideas, what to explore next in tech and creation and keep learning new things.

I'm exactly the opposite. 80-90% of what I do is 100% improv. There's no white-and-black keyboard to be
seen; everything is from a sequencer or right off a modulation source like a Turing or a sample-and-hold, or
even an Ultra-Random.

The music then happens. It evolves as the patch evolves. Not always perfectly but often better than good
enough to trigger the reward center of the brain and incite further particiption.

And yes, there are plenty of "more cowbell" moments.

And plenty of "pull all the patchcords and start over" moments too.

But that's the way it goes.

And when the rewards get less than the annoyances, I'll put it all on buy/sell/trade, because it's not the equipment that
is supposed to be enjoying it. It's the human.

Make bleepy death ray sounds until I get better at making really cool sounds.

I've been playing bass and guitar in bands and writing songs (G chord, C chord, A minor etc.) for a long time. Modular synth is a whole different way of approaching composition and music.

I'm doing kind of chill-ish stuff and want to be able to incorporate cool synth textures into songs I'm writing on my old familiar instruments.

My system started as a MS20 replacement. Never really got there with just DIY, and its reason it exists seem to change monthly. I never wanted just a standalone unit though. Mine is integrated into the studio as a whole with lots of in / out and looms that go to my patch bays.
A mild euro crack habit.

Main goal is to have fun and do creative stuff. Bonus points if other people enjoy it. Also to learn more and more regarding diy, which I find extremely satisfying and fun.

Maybe also to fill my room with shelves of eurorack.

Well guys, i thought i'd bring this topic to its conclusion for me. I've had fun with this stuff and i suspect i'll get back to it some day, but now isn't the right time.

(deleted stuff)

I don't have enough posts to post in the For Sale section so i'll probably try it on craigslist or ebay unless anyone who reads this is interested.

Thanks for all the insight and support. I'll be back!

The 'Process' is just as important as the result for a lot of people, myself included. We all enjoy thinking about and creating new experiments in sound.

My goal......

I studied an instrument for 25 years, learned synthesis, spent thousands on equipment, formed bands, sat indoors on sunny days making recordings, what for?...........to "get the girl"

There must be an easier way?

:hihi:

I only have 3 modules atm. My current goal is to fill my 104hp of rackspace.
That will take time enough (because of money and time).

The main reason i started though is because I study electrical engineering at university and looked for some fun DIY projects to put all the theory in practice.
And because i'm a bit obsessed with music. So eurorack seemd the perfect combination.

I have a few goals...
-DIY as much as possible
-Become good enough at DIY to sell modules and recoup some :75: I put in to this thing
-Make music I enjoy
-make music others find tolerable

And...

Eventually design/build my own modules - I have never designed a circuit board and as of right now, I can barely read the diagrams...

good answers!

Wow, you guys! If this question had been asked at a virtual instruments forum or rock and roll forum (KVR and gearslutz, for example), the answers would have all been variations on "riches and bitches", either honestly stated or some nebulous way of avoiding saying it direcctly!

You guys are clearly grown-ups and freeks, awesome!

My end goal is to gather as many modules together into as large a system as I can, then sell them.

The exploratory process. The "not having a plan" and the "let's see where this goes" aspect very much appeals to me.

And to have a wall of blinking lights that looks like something out of a crazy scientist's laboratory :goo:

...i spend time isolated in a room listening to robot farting sounds

i am now a connoisseur of robot farts. i have spent thousands of dollars to make the perfect rhythmic robot fart sound. man, it's a good robo fart. you people will never be able to understand or appreciate how perfect it is.

my bank account, where did it go?

how do i get out of this trap?

To find out how many patch cables are needed for the modular to become sentient.
