That is a Great Looking Case! Did you build it? If so, can you share details, plans, drawings, dimensions, etc.....
Thanks!
Henfield, thank you for the kind feedback, and yes, it's homemade. I'm not much of a carpenter, as it turns out, but I'm quite pleased with the basic design. I don't have actual plans. I just went through a few mock-ups using leftover hurricane plywood first.
The basic design involves three 17-space tiers at 30 degree increments (30, 60, 90). The 17 spaces is conveniently 36-ish inches, so I used stock 36" hardwood square dowels in 1/2" and 5/8" sizes. The 5/8" pieces were trimmed at a 30 degree angle and the two pieces were glued together forming a 150 degree angle (I think) for the two rails. Along with the two center rails, all you need is another trimmed 5/8" dowel to glue to the front trim piece for the bottom rail, and the top rail just mounts flush to the top panel, since the top tier is 90 degrees. The rails need to be braced to support the force of patching. That's just a hunk of wood that attaches to the back panel in the center of each rail.
Basically, the three cuts and a bit of glue was all it took to get the basic structure. From there, I attached modules at the ends of the rails and used that to trace the basic shape of the end panels. I didn't do a perfect job cutting the end panels, but it came out reasonablly well. I assembled the cabinet using aspen panels from Lowe's. They came in lots of useful sizes, including 24"x36, which turned out to be almost perfect for the back panel.
This is getting pretty wordy. If you are interested, I can take some photos of the rails, which would make these details make more sense. I also took a lot of photos along the way to document my progress hacking away at this thing.
What I like about the design, aside for its "vintage" charm is that all of the modules are easily within reach from a seated position. The 51 spaces fit in a cabinet that is shorter than the Dotcom 44-space cabinet/garage combo and about a foot less wide. The front edge allows enough clearance for a controller keyboard, and the cabinet is about the length of a 5-octave keyboard. I haven't actually put my keyboard in front of it yet, but it looks like doing so would make me have to stretch a bit to reach the top tier when seated.
I'd be happy to share any details if I missed anything of interest to you.
Cheers,
Brian
