I typically don't like super rezzo stuff but this is very pleasant sounding self oscillation! Maybe i'm just partial to EMS circuit, which I think sounds great. Is this Yusynth design, like DIY version of Sea Devils?

Yusynth. Just wanted to see if other people also think as I think that some filters are annoying when super rezzy, but others, are are super nice.

filter farts

Post by twospartans »

different strokes for different folks..
that's beauty of modular land! :party:

personally i tend to make anything resembling a 'bassline' with a filter in self oscillation. i get amazing sub bass out of the wee intellijel uvcf.
sometimes using one filter to filter another filter.. as some filters scream more than others.

interesting that you went with the sara vcf, as i instantly thought 'dual self oscillating additive fun' when i first saw it.

finally i'd like to add another +1 for: taking it to the edge.. i LOVE my mn MMG for this. very beautiful tones can be achieved. of course, beauty is relative :mrgreen:

Almost like a psychotic TB-303! :nana:
Same with the jumpers on my dual Borg. Left them on for a while, but recently had to scavenge for jumpers. Sounds quite different now, and riding that cliff is much more satisfying now.

Indeed, it´s tied individually to every filter, at least I can tell from the ones I got, also the way they are used and the frequency they are set to. Your example sounds quite pleasing here.

it's a tool,-- a free extra that comes with real VCFs. if you don't want to use don't. If you're not creative,avoid it.
At least it's not CGI crap.

Yeah it seems to come on a bit too strong with my MMG, especially if I'm filtering a sample as opposed to an oscillation input. It hits the dominant frequency of the sample and peaks out. It's not easy to tell when it's going to happen either without being super gentle on the res.

its like a heavy-metal guitar solo. theres a right time and a right place, but too much is too much lol

It depends on what you want to achieve i guess.
I have to say though the most fun i usually have with filters is manipulating their self-resonant qualities. I find that one can get very 'natural' sounding results.
Here is an example from playing with the resonance of a vcf02:

Well, I posted this example not to long ago in it's own thread, but I am re posting it here because I have no true oscillators in my 2 systems...and I'm using 5 filters at self oscillation as each of the sound sources in this experiment...

I love using filters in place of oscillators! :tu:

Nothing annoys me more than listening to a demo of a filter only to have the dude wiggling it at 100% resonance self oscillation for 15 minutes squealing like a banshee. I mean WTF??? Who uses a filter like that? :bang:
Don't know about you but I reckon it sounds bloody annoying and I generally only use my filters with resonance set between about 40-70% depending on filter obviously.
Anyway, rant over :lol:
I don't understand, were you upsetted by people, or your lack of imagination and curiosity ? :hihi:

We, Samplists! Are indeed using synth filters like that.
We, Mixing guys are indeed using filters like that since ages, to enhance kicks for example.
We, SUB bass makers! Are using self oscillating filters like that OB-VI-OUS-LY.
We, Sine Tones adorators! Are using filters like that for those pretty and smooth pad sounds we can obtain by adding one or two effects.

And yes we may record crap because we learn the stuff inside/out, in all its aspects, open minded.
Knob twiddlin' for 15 minutes, and then we may only sample a snippet we love, and spread it on keys...or chop.

You know...that recording thing most modularists here don't do. :mrgreen:

And sometimes we upload those random recordings when someone asks for it, then it is shared on the internet...

And at the very end of the chain...of the hate-chain to be precise, you find that angry wiggler full of judgments that can't even imagine the original intention and needs to post about something that has nothing to do with the music the guy do, the guy that did the real effort, recording, uploading, sharing. :razz: :razz: :razz:

Sorry, could not resist. It should have been said years ago. Rant over :twisted: :hihi:

I cannot comprehend the idea of not liking a Moog filter self-resonating :hmm:

sure, screaming can be annoying for extended amounts of time but the ridiculous, building reverberating bass that my E440 makes... :hail:

Did you try this technic with some "complex" filters ? Like Three Sisters or Belgrad ?

You can achieve some outerspace chord sounds with the Three Sisters...

And with Belgrad, you can get some unreal techno detuned bass/medium.

Patch tip for a nice detune bass with Belgrad :

- Filter mode 2 (lowpass + bandpass) ;
- TITO on SM mode ;
- SPAN fully CCW ;
- Balance at noon ;
- crank up the global resonnance with cutoff between 9 and 12 o clock...
- enjoy :)
