For me it's the other way around: the only reason I'd be tempted to expand into 5U is that it looks much cooler and more serious! But 5U just wasn't an option for me because there are no dealers nearby: probably not even in the same hemisphere. Getting a 9U Euro case shipped from Australia is eye-wateringly expensive enough: the thought of getting the equivalent functionality in 5U shipped halfway across the world makes my wallet cringe.

Besides, while I'm of the generation who grew up thinking of modulars as giant walls of black knobs that took up whole studios, a lot of people now have come to synths with a background based on all the electronic music that followed on from that. If you grew up with 303s and MPCs or laptops and soft synths, or come from a guitar pedal and noise music background like many of the Euro manufacturers do, then your image of electronic music machines is of a bunch of small things that are portable and giggable. Choosing Euro from this background isn't about cute and flashy: it seems simply natural, practical and affordable.

With my tired arms and bad knees I don't think I could handle anything bigger than Euro, my 15u height is enough of a stretch! :omg:

this stuff probably sounds awesome, but i'm not sure why they pushed those jacks up so close to the knobs and left all that empty space below. Euro is so cramped as is in general without stuff like this. It's good to see some branching out though. Club of the knobs makes great moog clones and at this price, I bet you'll see a bunch more of there stuff being ported over.

I love when there's a good ol fashioned euro/largeformat fight. :guinness: Do as you will. We all got into what we got into for a reason. And someday everyone will come to their senses and get a MU system. :hide:

This filter is really amazing in my eurorack setup but just a note the inputs are super sensitive as I can barely turn up my STG.mix mixer without distortion. I like some distortion but we are talking I cant go past 10 o'clock without too much distortion. It can be worked around no problem but strange I have never had a module be this sensitive before. Other then that I love it.

Cool vid but I can tell (as I just posted) the Aion is a bit too overloaded. I love me some good warm overdrive but i think it goes too far, too easy and you can hear it in this vid. There is a sweet spot were it distorts just a bit like a proper Moog but goes a little overboard to easily in my opinion. I really have to watch the input. Thanks for the examples. All great filters for sure !

that figures since the moog osc outputs are 1Vpp. euro is 5Vpp. seems this is a true replica :hihi: 8_)
nice sounds on the vid :yay: :tu: did you use any vca?
don't need midi, don't need keys, just want knobs and cables (all together now ;-)

Aaah ok that makes sense. Like I said it can be worked around pretty easy just not a lot of wiggle room going in. You know the best work around for this would be a Aion mixer and VCOs etc...(hint, hint) :hihi:

Very nice demo! The biggest difference between the filters is the more overdriven character of the Aion, as Bmod said. Otherwise they are pretty close to my ears. If the gain staging was tweaked a bit I think they could sound very similar.

Well, I think that just sold me on an E440! :hihi:

That Aion makes me think of Rush's 2112 sounds but the Macbeth wins in the creamy department. The E440 is nice but not at the level of the other two in the quantitative measure of eargasms.

I dont mean to be negative but if you are going to do a demo for a filter on its own thread you need to not have it distort so much. Ofcourse the others sound better in the vid as the other ones are not too distorted. just saying. I may have to make a demo when i get the chance. This filter is amazing but it does distort a little too easy i must say.

:hmm: Maybe a lot of people might prefer a more distorted sound? Maybe I'm one of them because the demos sounded good to me! :tu: When I had my awesome 9504A I did like to drive it pretty hard.

Maybe but for a comparison demo I think it should be all of them pushed or not etc.

I'd tend to agree but I don't know if I have ever seen a module demo that couldn't have been at least a little more comprehensive and complete . . . especially my own! :hihi:

In comparing two or more different modules that are in general the same thing (like 24 dB LPFs or triangle core VCOs etc) it becomes very difficult to be accurate and fair since they are different designs. Sure, you can show what each sounds like at minimum and maximum settings and the same voltage modulations but then you get into how one is designed for +5v peak inputs and the other +1v peak inputs or one has 100k course pot and the other 50k and another fixed steps and on and on so you try to compensate and more likely just end up adding to the inaccuracies.

I like to watch comparisons and have even tried to do some myself but I think they are largely useless and unrealistic for making a buying decision, no matter how scientific and fair they are. (with the exception comparisons of different versions of the same device by the same manufacturer) I think it is better to watch demos of a particular module being using in a real world system being the best it can be and then decide if that is something that will work for you or not.

you could easily make a patchcable with a 1:4 attenuator with just two resistors in one of the plugs.

all a matter of taste ofcourse, but distortion is a large part of that old moog sound. their vca's and mixers distorted too. i'm assuming here there was no vca in the demo signalpath. for drones on a modular that would be appropriate. so the filter is the last&only place to get some 'roar' going. the aion can do that nicely :tu: 8_) thanks for making that demo :hail:
i'd be interested how those filters sound when pinged. not yer standard eastcoast technique but it sounds great on my moog clone. hard s/h into cv and audio too ... and fm: see if you can make some nice bell/gong type sounds?
some look for a creamy sound. i'm always struck by how dry/boney/woody some of those old sounds are. more marimba then bongo

as for the agony of choice: all filters sounded good. many more around. i once had 3 mini's next to each other. i'd have kept 'm all if possible  each had it's own lil' niche that couldn't me duplicated by another. now i have not even one left, but still i'm happy as there are even more variations around nowadays. i can have a lil' dronebox much smaller/cheaper then a fullsize mini. golden days, me lads :smoke:

Hit the nail on the head there mate! Not saying I agree yours need work :hihi: thinking of my own and others in general. It's easy to watch back and see how things would have been done differently. And easy to look at others and think of what it "could/should" have done.

I've tried starting "what would you like to see" threads, which works well but not that much input sometimes. But that's the nature of the forum, somethings seem to get a lot of responses others not (even when it's the same sort of thing).

You can't do that and reveal too much for new modules, or companies just wanting to get something out there.

So yeah, hard to do, easy to look back and play Captain Hindsight on yourself. I did like the video here, I'm not sold on the resonance of the filter though. Maybe I wouldn't like an original Moog though :despair:

Here is a simple demo I put together last night. No fx so you can get a good listen to the filter nuances. I really love this filter! http://soundcloud.com/wavefuck/aion-904
