I have been trying to love the DFAM and I thought if I got a sequencer it would help but overall while it's fun to play and I love the range of sound, I've found it frustrating to sculpt out sounds when I just want to build beats. It seems like the people getting the most of the DFAM have modules to compliment it or have the Moog Studio Sound bundle.
I know this question is asked a fair amount but I would really appreciate your drum machine recs! I'm looking for something that is fun and intuitive to play if possible and would pair well with an Oxi One but could also fly on its own. I tend to like hardware and knobs more than menu diving and at this point my setup is DAWless. I'm looking to make ambient/techno and sometimes in your face beats à la Aphex Twin or Container. My budget is up to $700. I would also be willing to get a couple pieces of gear if it fit into the budget. I do have a Roland SPD-SX in my collection if that's helpful to know but that's my only other piece of gear to make rhythms.

Re: Drum machine quest
DFAM rocks, but it does only really unlock with support modules. And even then, it's got a certain workflow that's quite different from traditional drum programming. I know it's annoying to get suggestions that blow out your budget, but the new HexDrums is one hell of a bargain even at MSRP imo. Erica makes a standalone version of their LXR-02 that I really like, which should be under $600 MSRP. Unfortunately most of my knowledge is in the modular realm, and it seems like you'd want to steer clear of that.

I'm by no means an expert on drum machines but I've got a Drumbrute Impact and it's definitely both very intuitive and a lot of fun to play. The sounds are a bit limited, though, so I was looking for a second drum machine and I think the Roland TR-8S is a versatile and inspiring machine at a reasonable and affordable price point, especially second hand.
