Hi good people, some of you may have seen and joined the talk over at the old Axoloti forum, then when it died the Akso forum, then when that one went silent the Lines forum, then finally here on Modwiggler, a haven of liberty for open source DIY hardware projects.
Anyway, during the last few years I have been designing a hardware replacement for the discontinued (MIA?) Axoloti Core board.
Size: 59mm * 90mm (incl. USB and SD card sockets poking out)
Around here is the relevant discussion in the Lines thread "Axoloti Core & Derivatives", starting about halfway in the thread. Or check some images ofthe latest prototypes via ksoloti.axo on Insta.
Edit: PCB mockup via Altium365 here. This is useful for locating GPIO and their functions, confirming general dimensions, cross-checking with the schematic etc. (Note that this has been auto-converted from Kicad so the fonts and labels are a bit out of shape).
In short, Ksoloti aims for maximum compatibility with the original Axoloti, but with some layout changes and added features.
Apart from the differing layout, the two main hardware differences to the original Axoloti are that Ksoloti does not have any audio and MIDI jacks, and that the MIDI in circuit is optionally soldered on the bottom side of the board (but can preferably be placed on a shield/parent board).
But the Ksoloti has more pins broken out to headers than the original: apart from more GPIO, the two USB ports, USB power/VBUS logic, raw UART/MIDI and SD card pins are also available, which should encourage and make it easier to create respective shields or parent boards.
The board has been designed to be very thin (the tallest components are probably the USB Type-C jacks, pin headers aside), and to fit parallel behind a 12hp Eurorack panel.
There are two matching "shields" in the works, one a desktop FX box called Gills, comparable with previous Axoloti shields (like Hohum Lab Axocontrol etc.) but more comprehensive and expandable. Gills is basically ready to be turned into kits.
The other shield is a 20-22hp Eurorack module offering plenty of voltage control, front-panel access to USB and SD card, and exploiting most of the Core's features. It is currently 75% finished.
As to the original creator's consent and license, so far I was not able to get in contact with Johannes Taelman (apparently no one is able to). Someone suggested I'd go traditional, actually call the university where he supposedly teaches and ask them to put me through to him (quote: "do you remember phones?").
The license is GPL and allows commercial reuse, but more important to me, and the reason I have been reluctant to publish anything sensitive, is that Johannes is not reachable. Some interpret his silence as tacit agreement though I do not agree. Though Johannes did write in a forum post years ago that he'd be okay or happy with someone taking their own spin on, or "clone", the hardware. Which again does not mean much either. For what it's worth, my plan is to keep the license exactly the same like Axoloti.
Despite the "original creator" dilemma The Ksoloti Core board itself has gone through five prototypes, has been tested by a few Axoloti veterans by now, a first major batch has been put into production, and the Core will soon be available at a certain SynthDIY shop that rhymes with monk.
The Core will probably be around 75 EUR excl. VAT.

Re: Ksoloti Core
An interesting development! I had an Axoloti a few years ago, unfortunately the USB connector snapped off and I never got round to fixing it. So it's been stuck with the instruments i'd installed at the time and it's now in a drawer.
Good luck getting this released, i'll be following for sure

Re: Ksoloti Core
I'll be following this - my axo is away for repair (minor power thing) though if I can make the same but smaller I'd probably go for it. Got any idea on pricing and such?

Looks like a really interesting project - will be following closely! :-)
Re: Ksoloti Core
Great project!
Still amazes me that Axoloti didn't take off, but instead died. Mine is also on the shelf, built the addon board for it but haven't used it since.

Re: Ksoloti Core
Would the patcher interface compatible with the original? In that case I’d be interested! It was such a nice idea that died an unjustified death imo. Hope it goes better with your project.

This is really great news. I had both an Axoloti and still have an Also or two sitting around no doubt unused.
Is it the idea to sell the euro rack version fully assembled, as kits, PCBs or just as open source schematics?

Technically there are a few expansion boards and shields available which will go for less, depending on the parts. I'd have to tidy up the designs and do the edits that came up after testing the prototypes. For example there is the "Power and MIDI subboard" This is basically the power and MIDI part (that was removable) from the original Axoloti, as if you'd broken it off the main board then connected it via 5 wires.
You mean would the patcher still be able to connect to original Axoloti? In fact the patcher is currently the exact same like for Axoloti, just pointing to Ksoloti's custom firmware. So yes, the patcher can connect to both, although it currently would be a bit tedious as you'd have to change the firmware path in the preferences and restart every time you change between Kso and Axo. I have been making edits to the patcher but honestly I'd prefer staying with the Axoloti release for now.Would the patcher interface compatible with the original?
Or do you mean patcher compatibility of Ksoloti? Yes, it is based on the last stable firmware (1.0.12-2). So far all patch tests showed 99% compatibility. 99% meaning you may need to swap some GPIO objects because three of the original Axoloti pins are not available. Any other patches are (shockingly) firing up just right. Testers reported their patches made on original Axoloti were working without issues on Ksoloti.
Oh good question, I'd probably try to get it done either as a full kit or PCB+panel kit (though the SMD parts would be assembled anyway). Is it the idea to sell the euro rack version fully assembled, as kits, PCBs or just as open source schematics?

Very nice
Re: Ksoloti Core
Hey everyone
On the power and MIDI breakout board, is there a mounting screw hole on the back right, behind the pins?
Just in case there isn't, at the risk of being the mounting screwball (
) I recommend one there if space allows, since the 5 pin jacks see a lot of stress when plugging and unplugging them. It could save a lot of potential repair requests in the future!

Re: Ksoloti Core
Sure is! It might even have been you who made that suggestion elsewhere! It is the old prototype in the photo above. Thinking about extending the board to the right a few mm to place a fourth mounting hole (they're all M3) top right.
Re: Ksoloti Core
Don't do that!sebiiksbcs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 1:43 am Thinking about extending the board to the right a few mm to place a fourth mounting hole (they're all M3) top right.
The DC INPUT is designed to mesh with the housing.
And you can easily move the hole up behind the input. I'd have shrunk the label to put the rear hole even higher.

Re: Ksoloti Core
There's a housing? Where?
Re: Ksoloti Core
I do that in the manufactured designs but keep the DC jack flush on this board. Reason: This is for DIY/experimenting at home and it is hard to drill/file rectangular holes. Let alone good looking ones.KSS wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 3:27 amDon't do that!sebiiksbcs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 1:43 am Thinking about extending the board to the right a few mm to place a fourth mounting hole (they're all M3) top right.

That is a good idea! Will this really improve stability a LOT though? Why not keep the mounting holes aligned in a rectangle? And you can easily move the hole up behind the input. I'd have shrunk the label to put the rear hole even higher.
There is a desktop unit called Gills that is basically finished, I'll upload some info when it is tested.

Why not keep the holes in a rectangle? Because the triangle is stronger. And PCB is smaller
Again, I'd move the MTG hole up to the end of the DC input jack

Re: Ksoloti Core
Happy to see this project turn up here
I've been following it on lines for quite a while. I have several unused Axoloti, one that's been separated into two boards, and one that's built into a crude (and unfeasibly huge) Eurorack panel with breakout jacks. Had to fit it lengthwise…

Re: Ksoloti Core
I umm'd and ahh'd about Axoloti but, for one reason or another, I never committed.
However, this evolution looks too good to miss what with the options being developed for desktop and eurorack-type use.
I've started browsing the 'backup' Axoloti community forum at https://sebiik.github.io/community.axol ... #gsc.tab=0 but would be interested to know if there is an existing hosted library that one can download/upload patches from/into? Maybe this is buried in the aforementioned 'backup' forum and I haven't found it yet, or I have to search via the likes of github for individual patches, or something else ...
My intent is not to exploit other's work, far from it, but there are times when exploring someone's work is like opening a door to another world and enables a paradigm shift in understanding. I have a little bit of experience in Pure Data, so would pretty much be at ground zero!

Re: Ksoloti Core
I agree about studying others' patches to see how they work, after all it's in the spirit of open source.
Ksoloti uses the original Axoloti objects, both factory and contrib, at
https://www.github.com/axoloti/axoloti-factory
https://www.github.com/axoloti/axoloti-contrib
Objects customized for Ksoloti are hosted at https://www.github.com/ksoloti/ksoloti-factory
Ok those are objects though. As for patches, the Patcher itself comes with demo, tutorial and help patches which are comparable to the Pure Data tutorial patches.
Now of course if enough users out there make new objects or patches we could set up a new object or patch library.
Or I could compile all patches I collected from the old Axoloti forum into an own repo? However this would be hard to curate, not sure if I can test all patches and collect their respective subpatches and objects, if any, to make them work.
Also I guess you could search the actual github repo of the forum backup for patches (the search bar on the github.io backup website is still broken and I wouldn't know how to fix it)

Re: Ksoloti Core
The biggest want in axoloti world for me, which was supposed to have been implemented in the seemingly aborted V2, is the ability to patch 'live' (like in the bord modular environment) without the need to recompile after changes.
Assume that's something that would be too difficult to implement in the v1 environment this will be using?
