Blawan - Body Ramen

Post by wuff_miggler »

Love this :) Reminds me of writing a beat ,...then grabbing the session global pitch knob...and laughing at how crazy it sounds. This whole ep is wild. big ups blawan!

"oi, should I pitch it down and slow it?"
"yeah bruv, all the way"
"thass it...its done"
To say that math is important because it is useful is like saying that children are important because we can train them to do spiritually meaningless labor in order to increase corporate profits. Or is that in fact what we are saying?

XL recordings is just hitting it out of the ball park with their signees :) And its funny - for an old 80s/90s "first electronic" label to do it type imprint - they are SOOOO fucking onpoint....I wont bother listing what else they're putting out - i'd expect you to know if you're following electronic :P

I like XL but let's not give them toooooo much credit here Blawan had been doing this for more than a decade when he released his first record with them. R&S—to name another legacy electronic label—had him in 2011, for example, and he had heat on him even before that release. It's not like he was some huge gamble.

(EP is especially good, even amongst Blawan's catalog, no arguments there.)

Disappointed the cow doesn’t explode at the end, but cool tune.

It’s amazing. I’d love to know how he’s making some of the fuzz / distortion sounds, insanely detailed and animated

comment has nothing to do with them uncovering/blowing up Blawan. he's been on his own tip doing awesome stuff. They have still been putting out some really obscure shit...Egyptian artist Rozzma for example...they put that out before everyone and their dog thought they should be adding doumbeks to their club shit. LSDXOXO...Overmono....i could go on. I was actually going to include R&S in my previous comment too - but didnt think i needed to :P

There's a great course with him on his process here: https://www.homeofsound.co.uk/p/blawan- ... ull-course

Methods change, but at the time it's a lot of exotic Eurorack distortions, VST distortions, flangers, layers of notch filters, aggressive de-essing in the box, and resampling through high-end mastering gear. The main trick is just record, tons of effects, resample, repeat.

The whole EP is really good. Blawan’s consistency in being creative and putting out quality, is remarkable.

I guess? The brothers Overmono had been releasing music for years (including Tessela on R&S, though that's just a coincidence, it doesn't really matter), they were hardly a gamble. LSDXOXO was also established—I'll point to an RA profile/feature in 2019, but he was around before then too—before he released anything on XL. Certainly neither of these count as "obscure shit"?

I'll concede Rozzma, who I have not listened to but at least doesn't have much of a prior discography.

My point was just that XL is basically a legacy label that largely signs artists after they've already proven themselves, and Overmono and LSDXOXO are definitely not good examples to the contrary. There's nothing wrong with that but giving them a bunch of credit for their "signees" feels generous to me. Their signees are mostly artists who have already risen to a level where a label like XL will take notice.

Interesting stuff. On this note, if anyone’s got any recommendations for similarly good music then I’m all ears

Not sure he's really similar to Blawan, but Marco Zenker's 'Channel Balance' album is quite good
