Re: How to access the Disting Ex web editor

Post by walmik »

I updated to the latest dex preset editor html and am using firmware v1.20. It didnt solve the problem I was facing (no sysex from my Motu Ultralite, but I do see one minor improvement. For example if I m in single mode on the Disting Ex, clicking on "Enter Dual Mode" actually switches the disting ex to a dual mode. Wish I could get more functionality working. On my computer I think the MIDI message i get back is not what the preset editor expects. For example, I never cross this block of code:
https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/di ... #L957-L961

If it helps, here is a sample of the message.data alonside the hardcoded header:

data: Uint8Array(3) [224, 18, 35, buffer: ArrayBuffer(3), byteLength: 3, byteOffset: 0, length: 3, Symbol(Symbol.toStringTag): 'Uint8Array']
header: (6) [240, 0, 33, 39, 93, '0']

Lastly, could it be possible that I may not have connected the MIDI expander properly and hence not getting Sysex from the Disting back to my computer?

May i know how you solved this issue. I get the same issue as you reported earlier when I try G8 CV/Midi to send Midi data from the disting to my DAW. I m using firmware v1.20 and am using the latest dex editor from here https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/distingEX_tools

If it's not connected properly you'll get no MIDI at all.

Apologies for the delay in responding here. I m pasting the entire dump here for your perusal. Basically, onMIDIMessage is triggered a whole bunch of times when I click refresh. I do have 2 more MIDI devices (Keystep Pro and Bass Station 2) however these are turned off at the moment. Hence not sure what sends the pitch bend. Could it be from a previous session where i had used the Keystep Pro to play the Poly wavetable algorithm?

The attached image doesnt show the first message, it has this array
[240, 0, 9, 247]

Could the 240 here imply sys ex? Just based off of this page https://fmslogo.sourceforge.io/manual/midi-table.html

Well that's just garbage. Is the disting EX the only thing connected to the MIDI port?

Could you run a MIDI monitor (e.g. this if you're on macOS: https://www.snoize.com/midimonitor/) and see what that says the incoming messages are?

Did you run the 'test MIDI out' test on the EX?

Hello os, The only thing connect to the Disting Ex MIDI breakout is MIDI in and out from my Motu Ultralite Mk3. I installed the Midi Monitor and ran the Midi out test from the Ex. This is what I got before exiting the test

That, sadly, is all wrong. There would appear to be an incompatibility between the two - or something is broken.

How confident are you of your MIDI cables?

I think the midi cables might be fine however I don’t mind trying something out to better assert this. I have 3 midi cables at home and they seem to send midi to the ex correctly (I can play the poly wave table algorithm)

As for something being broken, could I have inadvertently broken something? I did have this post back when I bought the breakout for my second ex and might ve messed something https://www.modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=268596

Anything you might have done is more likely to stop it working altogether. It seems like the Ultralite is recognising that MIDI is being sent, but it's not receiving it correctly.

I don't suppose you have any other MIDI devices you could try?

I do have a key step pro and a bass station 2. These have the midi din in/out ports and connect to my computer via USB. Could I use either of those? I also have another ex.

You could try. I don't know off hand if either of those would pass MIDI from its DIN input to the USB port, but it might.

I will give it a shot, In the mean time, I am not sure what I did exactly, but i changed the cable around and could see something execute that I hadnt seen before. And that is thia line https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/di ... .html#L962

Sample:
4:31:07 AM: sent mapping request to disting EX
4:31:07 AM: received sysex (4 bytes)
4:31:07 AM: received sysex (4 bytes)
4:31:07 AM: received sysex (2 bytes)
4:31:08 AM: received sysex (2 bytes)

Nothing else improved, but just these ^ logs started showing up on hitting the refresh button or the Show MIDI or knob mappings checkboxes, in the editor web page hence I took another dump from the midi monitor in case it helps to see if anything has changed from before

The fact that doing something with the cable changed anything at all does suggest the cable might be suspect.

Hi os, I apologize, kindly ignore my previous message. The sysex related logs showed up only coz I messed with the local JS to allow that. It s quite late here and I probably should get some sleep. I will try again later.

One minor update I have is, the KeyStep Pro thing didnt work out :/
I havent tried with the BS2, but will try it for sure.

Oh what joy! I m terribly happy to report (after my attempts with BS2 failed as well) I went and bought the MIO iConnectivity USB-Midi interface ($39) and I m finally able to use the web editor for presets! Thank you os for your patience and for your products!

I m attaching my victory screenshot which boasts all the controls for the multi fx algorithm in it s full glory for others who come here with a similar problem to not lose hope and more importantly to not give up on the MIDI breakout of the Disting Ex!
