100 gecs? Cool, I like their spirit. Zoomer pop punk revival? Rock on, sounds great. Etc.

This is the first thing where I'm like, "Alright. Time to start withdrawing from the world, I have zero interest in even seeing what happens here, thanks for the fun times everyone."
same thoughts, also when given the context of weaponization which is not even mentioned alongside AI
The foundations of AI, and actual AI, date back to DARPA (and others) programs from the 1970's. Although hardware has advanced exponentially since then, the fundamental mathematics has hardly changed at all. Back then AI was used for the usual spooky stuff and only a few very expensive weapons systems, e.g. nuclear submarines. Now, of course, it has made its way into everything on a modern battlefield.
makes sense why it was in virtually all major sci fi films in one flavour or another, I did a little search last night and it went back to the 60s, ELIZA and PARRY, or at least tye intentions for some of AI has like you mentioned been around for longer, I guess if it is applied in the context of modern warfare you are right, AI could be used for specifically singling out targetted individuals provided that electronics are the medium for accounting of potential victims, one example might be AI could create problems for specific people using the NI number and who all depend on say "gainful income" or relied on electronic payments without problems with wages, or, with vaccine delivery, one individual could be electronically booked in to recieve a placebo, unwittingly, while another a harmful gene editing technology, both unwittingly, all it would require is a strong computing power achieved in regards to batch barcoding strategies, individuals could be matched to specific selected batches via algorithmic determination from a choice set by data provided over a massive area including census data, facebook or twitter (people can be more easily data based on political or religious loyalties known elsewhere)....food for thought!! I guess the music production is simply residual intent, but can be later aimed at gaining complete control of industry standards.

AI is not particularly useful for precise targeting, although no doubt evil entities would like to do that with it. There seems to a be a persistent 2% or so error it makes. That is kind of the reason I don't think self driving vehicles are going to happen -- most of the time they would work fine but a small, but not insignificant, amount of time they would create disasters.

Likewise with using AI to assist in the creation of new music. Of the new material, roughly 30% is quite nice, another 60% OK, and there still is that 10% fraction that is poor to dreadful. Fortunately the poor to dreadful is easily identified by just listening to it. When it goes wrong, it goes really wrong!

It's a difference between on the one hand AI that has to do a task correctly, like driving cars, or diagnosing disease, and on the other hand creative tasks like image and especially music. Music is not correct or not correct. If an AI makes a mistake and does something unexpected in music, it can end up being interesting.

That's why I don't know what role machine learning will have in music. An AI can learn itself the four chord progression commonly used in pop music, but then we end up with even more boring and generic pop music.

Recent google paper on the MusicLM project, which is a text to music model. Many examples published alongside the paper.

Probably just me, and no insult intended to the use in the thread here but I wish people would broadly just use "machine learning", "AI" comes with such a manic hype quality for something best used as a tool over the promises of California Ideology-minded "disruptive" VCs that love TedX talk jargon and oscillating between LessWrong style libertarian teenage apoalyptic mindgames and promises of blockchain/AI "utopia".

The hype machine gives me such a headache.

Anyway, algorithmic/stochastic music has always interested me but the current crop of tools being sold I've tried trials of or demos and haven't really been that interested in.

There can be some occasional motes of interest within but the time spent sifting through nonsense when I should be creative is time unspent developing myself.

Not here to restart the same arguments probably heard a million times on non-artist sites, but it is funny that the people who react with the most vitriol there aren't artists, hobbyists, or even a dilettante's use of any tools or instruments. Anyone else see kneejerk responses to... nobody in particular along the lines of "you hate uncreative people having a good time", "the artist class wants all the money [lol] and attention for themselves", and "what about all the indie RPG makers" as if we all needed midjourney clones, my original D&D books weren't so polished!

Apologies for the minor gripe, carry on :)

AI music is going to be like ads, pop-ups and spam. People will ignore it because it will be annoying as fuck after a while.

That’s the thing, in an attention economy it’s cheaper to pay to access hundreds of human lives worth of stochastic “content” and flood all feeds and streaming services, the low cost per viewcount means that the more it’s tolerated in practice the less human touch we’ll experience.

It’s been bad enough seeing people spam us with the nascent results of “AI”, some can be… cute but rapidly diminishing returns when people generate “sludge” content.

I love aspects of technology (all artists know their tools!), hate ecosystems overrun with enshittification and trash “content” farmers. I have enough executive dysfunction, i don’t need attention vampires sucking up my brain for nothing.

The lack of choice in social media curation, alongside recent forced tiktokification of Facebook/Insta where “content” creators i don’t know and haven’t followed are shoehorned in, i cant really engage with “AI” at all.

That said and far less bitter, MLwise is everyone familiar with Stemroller? Excellent, FOSS stem splitter and i’ve been enjoying decomposing some favorite tracks into isolated bass, drums, vocals, etc. I’m surprised at how little phase issues it has, and ironically due to libraries from a Facebook Research project.

Also re: AI and “Web3”, so happy the “metaverse” scam flopped so hard, forever love FoldingIdeas/Dan Olsen’s essays.

the problem with the music industry might just be saving us from AI music - a bunch of laws

from what i know - there is no other reason an AI hasn't learned all of recorded music and thus be able to reproduce in any of those "models" publicly - essentially so many publishing and copyright laws would lead to endless lawsuits and destruction of any company -
music has the most established legal boundaries of all the arts - and the variation from country to country makes it even more difficult to avoid...

for quality potential - see all the voice and speech synthesis AIs - music is not more complex than speech - and the emotion context for quality text to speech is moving really fast towards useful...scary useful...like the AI "understands" how to use speech convincingly

i actually believe AI will eventually lead to universal basic income - we all helped train the AIs - they can pay us for that so we have money to spend on it - the circle of life....

I always dreamed of the day when AI would do all the jobs, make music and art, and humans could be left to do menial jobs for minimum wage.

My wife uses GPT4 a lot now and finds it really helpful at work, her income has gone up 20%. But she doesn’t see that she’s training her replacement.

Reminded of the scene in terminator 2 where Arnie tricks the liquid metal into divulging the wrong name of John's dog.

Imagine you recieve a phonecall from someone you know (sounds like only one specific person you know) and that person speaks with authority on the knowledge of all your social media inputs over 20 years or so, to formulate a quick but coherant conversation, then asks you to help them in what they discribe as an emergency situation, requiring your immediate reaction to leave the safety of where you are......your blood type is a match, your organs are healthy, your now unwittingly playing the missing persons lottery.....

that is just one scenario that can only become significantly existential in probability upon the arrival of voice algorithmic technology. Doesn't seem so far fetched now.....yet when realized in the Terminator 2 film it was just deemed a clever plot point in the hunt for John Connor....

Also when considering the amount of primary data being released on statistics of excess deaths released in the new Canadian and UK health, Im reminded just how many people cannot be convinced of real dangers, let alone hypothetical scenarios with only possibilities existing.

We know what was safe and effective is becoming something sudden and unexpected, but without honest acknowledgement it remains obscure.
I apply the same reasoning to the premise of AI overall...cui bono?

This reminded me of a video I watched about some guy who has legally tried to patent all possible chord progressions not included already in commercial music, cant remember his name and like most news filler/padding no follow up of the success he had or the outcome, however its funny how the whole "forerunner" has already appeared in the form of Ed SHEran vs Marvin Gaye.....over...you guessed it....a chord progression, which we are not meant to see or apply the ramifications of lawsuit case precidents nor see the test/attempt being made.

I recently researched this a bit (in hope to find something useful to accompany my modular synth and trumpet, not to generate finished music) and it seems way behind image or text generation. The most useful projects I found were Amper Music and AIVA, but I still haven't explored enough to see if they can produce anything better than super-generic royalty-free music that you can use for a youtube video background

Looks like MusicLM is the thing. Someone posted above about it. That shits insane. Im on the waitlist to try it.

This stuff is gonna end up inside Daws isn’t it? Wild.

What does this do to our perception of music in the future? we won’t ever know if something is human or not or if the artist has any skill whatsoever or not. Previously we could hear in something that it required an impressive amount of skill and creativity but in the near future thats no longer going to be true. What does that do to how we perceive music in general?
Seems like it will increase the value of live music.
