Orbitals Chip Lost, looking for help/advice

Post by mcasemo »

Hi there, I’m looking for some help.

I have an Orbitals PCB+Panel kit I got in 2016, finally starting to build some of the DIY/Kit modules I’ve collected.

I’ve either lost the programmed PIC chip (PIC18F46K22) or it was left out of the kit, I have no idea, regardless I’m SOL without a chip and am looking for any options to complete this project and avoiding a waste of PCB, Panel, and all the other components I bought.

I’m reaching out to Hexinverter, but I’m now realizing they are no longer providing support, so I’m attempting to reach out for other options to salvage this module, PCB, panel, components.

Does anyone have advice on what I should do next? Is there a way I can get the .hex file / code ethically from someone else who bought it? Can it be read and then written to a new chip? I have my receipts from the purchase .but not sure how that works with code.

If I can’t kit chip for this project, is it worth pursuing any other open source sequencer code for this PCB/circuit? Is that worthless without schematics? Anyway, just looking for advice, feel so stupid for losing the chip (or not realizing it wasn't provided when i bought it)

Much thanks
Mark

To clarify, I don’t expect hexinverter is responsible to help, it’s been a long time since I got this, and they shut down. I also only just tried contacting them a few days ago, haven’t really given a chance to get back to me, I just am taking the possible loss of this module harder than expected, LOL. So no shade at all, all my dumb mistakes for losing this thing

The chip definitely comes with the kit. I have an orbitals - it might be possible to extract the firmware and burn another pic with it, but I'd need to get a PicKit 3. I was debating doing this for another project - if I decide to go for it I will see if I can get the firmware out of mine. Could be another month before you hear from me.

I got the Pickit, and I think I managed to read the firmware off the chip. Next Mouser order I'll grab a PIC and see if I can write to it. Since I have a working Orbitals, it should be easy to verify if the chip is working. If I get a working chip I'll DM you for the address and ship it out to you.
