help me finish my musique concrete/ambient system

Post by dark_carcass »

hello fellow wigglers. :guinness:

im putting together a rig for live performance. just to give some ideas of what i want to achieve i say musique concrete ish stuff with background of ambient/drone textures. but really genre thing doesnt matter. i love these modules and what they can do... :hyper:

the ones on the bottom row i already have and planning to buy modules on the top row:

also have a mfb kraftzwerg and a volca kick which i do some wierd ass techno when bored. :sb:

i have 12-18 hp free and maybe can swap some stuff out if needed, so what would you add to this system?

since i love delays and sound manipulative effects im thinking of getting something like these effects. or do i need more envelope/vca stuff?
tell me what you think :hail:

lfo's, things that can change settings over time, attenuators with offsets. I know Maths can do that but I always seem to need a lot of them. Ochd is a good one, Batumi too
and yes, effects like delays and reverbs, I also seem to need a lot of them too

With that limited space I'd add an FX Aid and another (maybe stereo) filter for utility / mixing purposes. Haven't used one, but maybe WMD scalpel for more complex filter shapes. You'll get a lot from shaping in the frequency domain.

Blinds can work as quad attenuverter and offset generator. Combined with Maths offset and attenuversion is covered pretty well in that rack IMHO. I know because I use the same combo in my 104HP/6U rack (and the Doepfer quad VCA as well. Oh, and Morphagene and Fluctuations Magnetique, too).
Congrats on owning Blinds. Like Maths this is a modular swiss army knife. But unlike Maths it's hard to get nowadays

I always think of ring modulation for 'classic' mystique concrete.

Blinds is pretty much a quad ring mod. :hihi:

I'd suggest thinking again about the Cara and Atom clones, especially the latter - they are too small and cramped to be playable, especially in a live situation. The Pachinko clone of Marbles is larger than the Cara and is popular with MW users who own it. Meanwhile, Plaits and it's larger (8HP) clones (e.g. Beehive) offer an impressive sonic palette, especially with the recent firmware update.

The Mimeophon is also quite large and (at least IMO) has a 'signature sound' which is going to be far more limiting than a pair of (or even three) FX Aids.

FWIW the Xaoc Zadar plus Nin expander is great for adding slow variations and textures to ambient. Some kind of attenuation / offsetting should also be considered, such as a 3x MIA.

Hope that helps.

Hmm thinking about what I would want in a similar type case as the OP. Probably more in the way of processing to get a lively sound + more texture. When I borrowed Ikarie for a couple weeks I found it to be quite playable and lush sounding for a stereo filter—not huge either. I keep talking about WMD DPLR bbd delay as well because it brings lots of texture and dubby character to a mono signal (and stereoizes it).

Ochd or another mod source is not a bad idea. I also like one-to-many controllers like Makrow where a single LFO (say from Maths) can get multiplied several times at different amplitudes and polarities, and distributed across a patch—so there’s a lot of related movement, which can be compelling if you want to have a sort of responsive/breathing type of dynamics.

Nebulae. A module that is both different from and complementary to Morphagene.
I don't usually post my pieces (here and in general), but this time it could help illustrate my suggestion.

This track uses only Nebulae as a sound source (see the list of other modules in the SoundCloud page). It's generative music, recorded in one take. It was conceived as a tribute to Bidule en Ut by Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, the two main initiators of musique concrète.

Since you love delays.....
Tip top echoz is quite nice in 8hp.
Range of mono and stereo delays!

Instruo Lubadh covers delay plus a bunch more.
Love this module.

Still like my chronoblob 1. Not sure if the mk2 could be used as a pair of mono delays? Actually not sure if either are still easily obtainable.

Again not sure if it’s still out, Erica synths did a diy delay that is quite good I think. Ericas vceg +expander is a great envelope for playing!

(Also the Doepfer complex eg is quite fun to play.)

I’m always running out of envelope and attenuators
Even if I buy a quad type module they quickly get used up.
Rides in the storm make a nice compact attenuator.
Pleasantly cheap too!

All big modules need a lot of up space in back up modules!
You could easily add two more rails of utilities to those items you’ve chosen. That’s kind of how it grows?
It is surprising how many peripheral modules one noise source can consume!
Lead not, unless into temptation.
