Radiophonic Four - STG Complete System

Post by Heavenly3lues »

So... I was perusing some old STG Soundlabs posts in this subforum, because I missed out on the early days, and I saw a mention from John way back in 2013 alluding to a future STG system. Then, I decided to search all of Muffs for the posts about this system and discovered there were none. I figured it must be shared, because it does exist! The future is now 8-) I bought the Radiophonic Four a little over a year ago and, to my knowledge, it is the only one that exists. There's something wrong with that, because there should certainly be many more of these in the world (and you should buy one :sb: ). It is simply the best built synth I have ever owned (and I've owned many) and everything about it exudes quality, right down to the jacks, pots, buttons, and the construction of the individual modules. It is also very well laid out and covers so all the bases of analog subtractive synthesis (with a touch of wavefolding). Oh yeah... did I mention that it sounds incredible? I'll share the pictures that STG shared when it was put up for sale last year, because they're far nicer pics than any I've taken.

It's a beauty, isn't it?

There have been several systems built by the Suit.
They were all special and specific.
I missed buying one and don't play enough to justify the last one sold. (My favorite iteration so far, BTW.)
I have a large percentage of STG modules in my current system. The stuff is top notch.
I'm only a few modules shy of Radiophonic 4 in MU.
If I have water in my ear, is it safe for me to listen to electronic music?

The only other Euro systems I know are the Radiophonic Four and one 60 HP system he did that was a variation of the Radiophonic Four. Can’t remember the name of that one. Would love to see more of them! STG’s stuff is definitely super high quality and, IMO, underrated.

Definitely! Everything you need for a nice little analog subtractive modular system with a lot of flexibility!

STG Soundlabs Radiophonic 2

Post by Licudi »

Anyone know what an STG Soundlabs Radiophonic 2 is? Mootbooxle uses one in a few jams on YouTube.

As far as I can tell the only difference between the better-known Radiophonic 1 and Radiophonic 2 is the substitution of the .com divider for the .slc waveslicer. Anyone know for sure? And does that mean there's a Radiophonic 3 in the planning/abandoned stage as well? Nothing about these on the STG/Soundlabs website.

I think Eric’s email is on the STG website. He could probably let you know whether anything else is in the works, or guide you to creating your own setup.

Seems there may have been a Radiophonic Zero as well, though it's not clear to me if any of these models made it beyond the prototype/planning stage other than the R1. Can't have helped that some of the STG modules involved WMD.

my idea was that the three would have different characters. One would have the Sea Devils Filter and the .SLC, Two would have the Post-Lawsuit Lowpass Filter and .COM, and Three would have two VCOs, no mixer, and a Wave Folder. All three have been on Reverb at one point or another:

In the end I think these are just too premium for the eurorack market. there are FOUR Radiophonic Ones that have been sitting at Noisebug after Alex Ball did his very excellent video about it, which is how many were there before.

While I may be successful within the limited parameters of "instrument designer with a long history of satisfied customers," I am currently and absolutely a failure as a "eurorack manufacturer" and I can't justify thinking of myself in these terms any longer. I need to focus on Moog format and standalone things. I'll probably float a 4HP version of the SEM EG but unless people get their wallet out I don't want to put any effort past a front panel mockup.

I've got other 60HP standalone synthesiser ideas, but especially after Pittsburgh has came out with their very nice new 60HP instrument I don't even want to make an analogue monosynth at all.

Thanks for the insight into the Radiophonic range. I'm sorry to hear it's been commercially unsuccessful.

FWIW, I disagree about Alex Ball's video. I think it did a better job of selling him than the Radiophonic One.
