Does the same thing happen if you connect the controller to a computer, and route the MIDI through the computer to the FH-2?

Thanks for the guidance. I tested it and lo and behold routing the MPE MIDI through Ableton 11 does not cause stuck gates. Directly connecting the ERAE Touch to the FH-2 causes the problem.

Does this give you information / hints on what causes this and maybe even what could be done to fix this? Is it on the manufacturers end?

It could be on either or both manufacturer's ends - some low level incompatibility in the USB stacks. It wouldn't be the first time the FH-2 has highlighted a bug in another device's USB code.

Needless to say, somebody would need access to both devices to attempt to debug it.

That sounds reasonable, I will try my best to contact the manufacturer. Should I try and point them your way in terms of maybe you getting access to one? I am not sure if they will move on it, but otherwise I don't see any other option, as you say.

Thanks! I relayed the info to them and hope they will reply. In the meantime I suspect that using a MIDI breakout module could alleviate this problem if I connect the controller via TRS MIDI if this is USB related?

Yes, though if it's an MPE controller it's likely to be sending a *lot* of MIDI so a DIN connection might be a bottleneck.

Just wanted to update you on the fact that there was indeed a configuration option in the ERAE Touch software, which allows the device to work as two USB devices one MPE and one non-MPE called "MPE Split". By disabling that feature and running it as one MPE capable device, the problem is gone.
