Ferrite Beads

Post by Schlumpfhut »

As i am about to embark on a journey into building several new modules i ran into a problem: The recommended ferrite beads in the parts guide are nowadays obsolete and the possible replacement (Kemet B-01-A) is not available anywhere. :help:

My questions to the swarm (and possibly Tony himself) would be:
1) How necessary are the ferrite beads?
and
2) If i can't get my hands on some with attached leads can i use ferrite bead with a hollow core and ran a thin pice of solid hookup wire through them?

Thank you all very much in advance

I'll have to update the parts guide on this one. But the B-01-A is still available at Farnell. Only a few left though until August next year.

They help reduce radio frequency interference. They probably have no real effect for most people. I live next door to a radio ham and anything that helps reduce RFI is useful.

Yes.

Thank you very much Tony.
I have found the B-01-RS to be the same ferrite bead as the B-01-A but mounted upright instead of lying on the PCB. As they are available here in Germany i would order a larger ammount of these and use them since space is not an issue.

FWIW: In various Oakley modules I have used the following leaded ferrite beads:
