pairing 1 Journeyman with other filters?

Post by Pav »

The value of pairing two JourneyMan filters one highpass one low pass is documented by Tony.
Has anyone experimented pairing one or other of the Oakley filters with a Journeyman to see if there is any surprise results ?
Its on my todo list to try.
Also would Euro JourneyMan and the 5U version pairing work as good?
Curiosity is killing my imaginary cat. hmm: :hmm:

IMO pairing a Journeyman in HP mode in series with just about any other resonant filter in LP mode sounds frikken great. I've tried it with Dotcom Q107 12dB, Q150 24 dB, MOTM 440 24dB, various Morpheus LPF modes, all work well. It seems to work best when putting the Journeyman after the LP filter, and adding a bit of filter 'drive'. Especially when you do the CS-80-style trick of routing a sine from one of the source oscs past the filter chain and mix it in with the output of the two filters, so you always get a big fat fundamental even when the Journeyman's HPF cutoff is being modulated higher, which would otherwise filter out the bottom end.

It's worth noting that the Oakley ASV (SEM-ish complete synth voice module) includes this cool trick built right into the voice architecture with a dedicated knob to send a triangle wave from OSC1 directly to the VCA, bypassing the filter, so you can keep a beefy low end even when sweeping the filter in BP or HP modes.

Info is here, it's the knob in the lower right cornet of the filter section:

This same idea of patching a sine or triangle wave from one of the oscs so it gets mixed back into the signal at the filter output can be good for other purposes too, like when you have a lot of intentional filter distortion which can sometimes rob the sound of the low end. This idea will fix that.

I do that sometimes for "grounding" FM sounds, where FM often pushes the fundamental up.
That's where a Slim VCO comes in handy, no need to "waste" (I don't see it like that, others do) a fully fledged VCO.

Hi, I need to (somehow) reverse Pav's original question:
I'm after a Korg 800DV's voice structure as a starting point.
This would require 2 pairs of Journeyman filters set to LP resp. HP each.
Since getting four Journeymans seems like overdoing it to me, could it be equally sufficient to use existing SVFs (which I have and like) for the HP-section?
I never had an 800DV at hands so my guessing is only based on sound clips of demos somebody else did.
Tony's SVF sounds great and I love all filter modes on it!
Thanks, Michael.

It'll not be the same sound. The Journeyman's HP function is -6dB/octave while the SVF is -12dB. They also have very different overdrive characteristics.

However, using two filters in series is always worth doing, so give it a go and see what happens. :tu:

 First paragraph, second sentence in your product description ... I totally overlooked this.
Sorry & thanks, Tony
