Looking for Blacet Rak-3 case or something else suitable

Post by Jimmyschaus »

Hello,

I'd like to buy a Blacet Rak-3 case, or something similar in size that would allow me to house my frac modules and Blacet power source. I am downgrading my synth and would like a smaller enclosure. All powered cases that I can find are Eurorack. Any ideas, or does anyone happen to want to sell their Rak-3 case?

Not sure if there will be any more available from Synthcube/Blacet anytime soon...

It's a bit of a problem with cases these days. Do Paia still have any of their single racks?
I ended up using vector rails and built cases round them using ply that I had laser cut. But depends how DIY you want to get.

I wouldn't hold your breath, Synthcube have been very slow at putting out any Blacet stuff.

I've bought euro rack ears and raw rails (the kind with the sliding nuts); you can drill a couple new holes in the ears for frac spacing and just bolt 'em up. A little more work to add the "cage" that john had on his racks, basically add some side plates to the ears and then more rails across the back.

I believe the FracRak chassis kit can still be obtained from PAiA:
https://paia.com/proddetail.php?prod=FR-7

They also separately have various 3U panels, power supplies, and the option to put power inside one of the wings of the FracRak chassis.

Onto a DIY novel implementation of a software-patched modular digital electronic music synthesizer.

!!!

They must've recently updated their inventory, or else I'm terrible at navigating their site. They've appeared to be out of stock of many things I was interested in for a few weeks now. I've given up on finding any new Rak-3 cases for sale, but am glad to see there are at least some options available again.

Thanks for sharing.

One quick note about the Rak-3 case. I bought one from John Blacet, along with a cover panel. On his old website though, the cover panel offered was really for the Rak-2, not the Rak-3. They are not mechanically compatible. So, AFAIK, today any Rak-3 case would ship without a top or back cover. For some, that might not be an issue. For example, because they are insetting the case into their own wood enclosure, or into a standard RETMA or Telco rack, with other stuff that occludes the top, and/or the larger rack has it's own back panel.

But for me, now that I know all this, I really much prefer the fully enclosed PAiA FracRack cases, and the fact that they are deeper in horizontal depth. They are super lightweight, but IMHO well machined. All holes line up well in my experience. I've built three, and have parts for I think four more.

I have a couple of PAiA racks and at least one 3U Blacet rack I am no longer using.

After all these months, I finally ordered a PAiA rack and power wing kit... I look forward to dusting off my atrocious soldering skills for that project. I'm excited to finally start looking into some approachable DIY projects and hopefully eventually building PAiA's dual osc/vcf/vca-mixer package offering as well.
