Dual Journeyman VCFs?

Post by terjewinther »

Since the Journeyman VCF is modelled after some famous Japanese synths that had dual filters...
I do remember these synths, and they had these two filter frequency sliders on top of each other with some tabs on them, so they would not overlap and cut out sound all-together. Many modified this so you could do that, but that is not the point. Tony mentions on his web site that when two of these filters are used together, "the effect is astounding".

This of course begs the question: Has anyone attempted to put two filters behind a dual panel, and modify everything so that you actually have two slider pots on top of each other? I know that you can do the same trick with CVs controlling the cutoff, and you have more flexibility with two single filters next to each other than a dual, but still: how hard would it be to make a mod and have the frequency pots modified to sliders?

I probably need real high quality pots for this. Any recommendation?

Well, I have built a dual, but the modifications were minimal (just normalling cv‘s of 2nd to 1st and out1 to in2).
The korg traveller does not look very ergonomic to me, sliders for cutoff neither. I do love the nonlinear range on these filters, especially with overlapping driven reso-peaks, but that does benefit from a little tweaking (read: nice opportunity for some major wiggling). The normalized cv helps with bandpass-type sweeps. Sometimes it would benefit from a little post-gain + limiting. It is my most used filter atm.

Edit: not sure why i don‘t see the previous euro journeyman thread listed, but here is a link to some pix of those minimal mods: viewtopic.php?p=3401045#p3401045

Thanks for the responses. The idea of switching between parallell and series as well as normalizing inputs is a good idea.

Hi,
so, IOW, among other things, creating some 800DV inspired sounds would require 2+2 Journeyman filters!?
Michael.
