Favorite Albums/Tracks of the Year

Post by oldenjon »

These types of threads are a staple on other forums I visit but don't recall ever seeing one here. I'm curious what people here are listening to when they aren't busy patching elaborate fart noises on their modulars. I personally haven't listened to a lot of new music this year, but maybe this thread will help change that? Here's a few to get the thread started:

My two favs of the year.

Not sure how to classify Kiln. Love their saturated sounds.

An unlikely number two is some Russian Deep Techno. 51 tracks and plenty of bangers!

Huge fan of KILN, beauty tunes.

I can't stop evangelizing this band, and on a synth enthusiast forum I'm assuming the hardcore pop-punk genre doesn't resonate super hard...

But my GOODNESS do I love it:

But that album came out in 2019, so we'll go with the new EP:

Edit: realized I should recommend tunes rather than dropping albums. Off the album "Fake Blood" check out the tunes "Out of Blood", "Fake Blood", "Moths in a Lampshade". That will give you a good feel of the places they go, but every track is a bop.

For the Thoughtz and Prayerz EP, "Pitch Black" and "Thoughtz and Prayerz" are two beauties. But again, it's bop central with these guys. I can't stop listening.

This is one reason I like these threads. I didn’t even know he had a new one!

Definitely have such threads here before with some people even being generous enough to Spotify their lists.

I love Low, but for whatever reason just wasn't vibing with this new one. It's like an album long extension of the last track on Double Negative (maybe favorite album of the last decade). Probably need to give it some time and listen again.

Thanks all for the lists, will check em out in the coming weeks.

I'll still be more likely to put on Songs for a Dead Pilot or the Transmission EP than either one. But it's great to see them explore different approaches. Strangely, this new stuff is less surprising to me than when they came out with some rockin' tunes in the early 00s.

I am so bad at following what's going on with the music (and I am one of those who like current music... and the one that is on the radio  ).

Two albums did get a lot of playtime this year though:

John Mayer - Sob Rock (so goooooooooood - I put it on and play along with the guitar, so fun)
Danny Wolfers (Legowelt) - Songs of Moss (great album to listen to when you are working - find it here )

Otherwise, this was a year when I started to listen to the blues. Some great albums in particular:

J.J. Cale - Troubadour, Really, Naturally, Okie & 5. I love this guy.
B.B. King - Live at the Regal. Fantastic album. Great singing, great playing.
New murky music that will take you on a journey through a land of mystery and wonder:

Sometimes I feel like I'm the last man on earth who still has an emusic subscription. But here's some great albums from last year I found on this store:

Shifted - Constant Blue Light
Toitoitoi - Vaganten
Eleh - Snoweight
VC-118A - Spiritual Machines
Polocorp - Gnawa EP
John Carroll Kirby - Septet

I'm one of those who really enjoyed Low's last album; similar textures as the previous album with more emphasis on the beautiful vocal arrangements.
However, I found the last Floating Point to not be as great as most critics say.
