Share your small drone/noise/experimental set up with a newbie.

Hey all, new here... and I guess new to the world of synth/modular overall.

I'm not a particularly talented musician, and I like raw dirty sounds, so drone/noise/soundscapes are things I tend to gravitate towards when I wanna make sounds.

I was wondering if anyone wanted to share the setups they use to make drone and noise music, particularly the small set ups 6u and 84hp and under.

Anyway, glad to be here - forgive my newness as I learn to navigate your forums. Looking forward to learning from you all.

My eurorack and (part of) my pedals here. The rig is larger that what you requested but consider I’ve been building it for over 20 years:

My rack is changing constantly. I buy and sell. New modules are always being released. The perfect rack is a moving target. I had a synth tech e340 that was good. Grone is pretty cool. Grendel has a eurorack drone module. You definitely need some distortion modules or a distorted filter. You need to some low pass filters. You need reverb either spring or digital. Maybe a phaser or comb filter. Tube modules are usually pretty good. Some manufacturers to look at
Bizarre Jezebel
X1L3
zerosum inertia
Troggotronic
Epicycloid
metasonix
Schlappi engineering
touellskouarn
British noise electronics
ieaskul F mobenthey
Paratek
NLC (non-linear circuits)
Noise engineering (I'm not a fan, you need to dig around for the good stuff)

Specific modules
Casper dark matter
Synthfox sledgehammer
Cosmatronic peradam
Circuit Abbey Gozinta
Maneco labs grone
Benjolin (various versions different manufacturers)
4ms harmonic oscillator
AJH entropic doom
Flight of harmony plague bearer (definitely buy two or more, it doesn't kick ass as a single)
Hex inverter VCnoize (old) VCNO (new)

My current performance drone setup dead simple:

Moog Subharmonicon, Soma Labs Lyra-8 > strymon DECO > BOSS RV-500 > Eventide Blackhole > SSL Alpha Channel > BOSS RC-5

The process is: tinker til I get a sound I like, record, tinker, overdub, repeat.

This is a video grab, so excuse the fact that it's shot at f/1.2:

This is my little experimental box. I originally bought it as a home for spare modules, but it's not big enough any more so I have to swap modules in and out. That's the thing about Eurorack. You buy a new case for your spare modules; you end up with more spare modules.

The logic module is the key thing. In that shot I only have a Volca modular plugged into it, but with multiple units I can feed the sync pulses into the logic unit, which at slower tempos creates a semi-random clock pattern. The other modules are the bare minimum of a conventional subtractive synthesiser - filter, amplifier, an LFO (plugged into the logic module in this case), a pair of A/R envelopes - minus the oscillator.

As you can see I've chopped a hole in my A-199 spring reverb in order to route the cable out of it. Ironically with this setup I don't have to (I could have put the spare 2hp just next to the A-199) but I originally had it in my main eurorack case. The A-199 is one of those things that sounds great, but you get tired of it, so you put it to one side, but you miss it, and the cycle repeats.

Here's what this setup sounds like, with everything fed through Valhalla Supermassive:

This is my new portable drone/noise setup. Flight of Harmony Infernal Noise Machine (INM-E) and Sound of Shadows in a powerbank-powered 4MS POD 64hp case.
