CV multivoice keyboard options for ASV?

Post by umma gumma »

Lets say you had 4x ASV builds, and wanted to replicate an Oberheim FVS setup with poly 4 voice keyboard control

What kind of controller options are there? Is there a 4 voice CV output keyboard controller?

or would you need a MIDI to CV adaptor to get proper 4 voice polyphony? That probably opens up your keyboard options compared to straight CV

And lets say you wanted an 8 voice ASV what is the ideal setup?

I assume CV would be preferable as there would be no MIDI lag between voice/envelope triggering?

I suppose you might also want to build a master controller for all the voice modules, like the Oberheims had. Is this a crazy line of thought?

It would be glorious though...

Thx

One serious possiblitly for such task would be the midmuso CV12. It's a 4-voice MIDI/CV convertor of which multiple PCB can be daisy-chained to accive higher grades of polyphony. On the downside one would have to make a custom frontpanel and wire all jack sockets by hand but this should be doable

Wow look at that!! What a useful device

You could run 2 of them to get 8x CV channels out

Thanks for the link!!

@Schlumpfhut Thank you for the tip! I just ordered a kit.

Only 1 Kit left in stock UG.... I'd go for it!

Yep I ordered two of them, plus 3x of the accessory cables per unit, to get a bunch more gates/customizable outs. Should be fun with sequencers & other stuff!

Thanks for the headsup @Schlumpfhut!!!

I used a Yarns for my ASV Four Voice and I'm very happy with it.

1) It works fine on +/- 15 volts (so you can use one PS for everything)
2) it takes MIDI pitch bend data and injects the voltage into the CV outputs
3) it has a built-in LFO (amount controlled by MIDI mod wheel amount) and injects the voltage into the CV outputs
4) it has portamento, even in polyphonic modes
5) it has a fun little sequencer built in, as well an an arpeggiator (clocked internally or externally)
6) it has a MIDI out that can be connected to a second Yarns for 8 voice control (but I haven't tried it out, YMMV)

There are quite a few good four-voice (or more) Midi to CV converters available, either as modules or a standalone boxes. They generally provide lots of useful options for things like voice allocation (round-robin, re-assign, mono mode, etc.) and many have built in features like portamento, arpeggiators, vibrato LFOs that are controlled by the mod wheel on the connected midi keyboard, etc. I don't think midi lag is anything to be concerned about. If the converter is connected directly between the source midi keyboard and the ASVs, it's going to be faster than a human's ability to move a key from the 'up' position to the 'down' position on a keyboard. Get whatever type has the features you need.

I don't have an ASV (I actually really wish I did, though. Maybe I should build one?) but I do happen to use, and strongly recommend, the Roland MPU-101 for four voice MIDI to CV. Best of luck!

Another popular option for polyphonic midi to CV box would be the "CV.OCD" box: https://six4pix.net/product/cvocd/

Or a Euro module option (modulargrid should be a good place to search for more): https://polyend.com/poly2-midi-to-cv-converter/

Or a MU version, which might be handy for use with the ASVs: https://www.groveaudio.com/gms744_mu.html

And the 'big guys', in rack mount format, like the Doepfer MCV24 and the Encore Expressionist:
