Pot Bracket Alternatives

Post by waldenpotato »

I'm curious of there are any pot/pcb bracket alternatives besides what Tony offers - something that just works off the shelf.

I see these types of brackets a lot:

Do the Oakley pcb dimensions fit these types of brackets?

Asking out of curiosity.

UPDATE:
Also, are there any fancy potentiometer alternatives these days? What are they called? Sealed plastic pots?

I don't know, but it will probably not fit.

It is easy to make a bracket yourself: buy a sheet of aluminium and plate scissors. Or you can go to the local tinsmith a have them make your bracket for a small price. Aluminium is soft and easy to drill. Have a look at my log where you can see the bracket I made.

There are two main reasons for using pot brackets.

1. They're cheap and effective.

2. They allow access to the underside of the board when the module has been completed. This means fault finding and repair is much easier than when you have to remove things to get to the board's underside.

I am not convinced with the longevity of conductive plastic pots. I've used several types over the years and none of them have faired much better than standard 16mm or 24mm pots. Indeed, one type, the Omeg ECO, were quite terrible. But Spectrol, Vishay and BI TT have all showed signs of wear just like traditional carbon tracked pots.

I do appreciate that if you live in a dusty area, perhaps near the sea or desert, you may prefer not to use open pots. But I would always recommend that gear is covered when not in use to minimise the ingress of dust.

This is the reason that has convinced me to use your pot brackets - hadn't thought of this.
