210e Hardware Update?

Post by tIB » Sun Feb 21, 2021 9:47 am

I read that the 210e had a hardware update that reduced noise on the audio side - does anyone know what exactly that was, and better still, if it's something that could be done DIY style to an old 210e?

I found this thread, but it doesn't seem to discuss audio section updates.

I was lucky enough to get one of the first low-noise revisions. I’d heard the older ones and there is a discernible difference but not gigantic until stacking gain stages.

However, the best solution is to sell it and get the Studio.h CSR. It is where the 210e should have evolved to circa 2015.

It does everything better. Is easier to use. Has more features and the CV section is fully analogue and actually works for scaling CVs. No jitter! It is one of the best tools for the system.

It does seem the obvious choice, just toying with trying out a 210e first to see how I get on with it (if I could get at a decent price), and the one I'm looking at is old.

Did I read it correctly that you are considering buying an older 210e? If so, I’d definitely skip it and just get the CSR. Save yourself a ton of hassle.

Honestly, the 210e’s CV section is near useless for most purposes besides CVs in motion.

You're probably right. CSR is on the list but I'm a little way away from it - need to decide whether it comes before or after the 250e too... I was scheming on a way to have my cake and eat it in the medium term, but it's probably a false economy.

Kent's advice is on the money. Moreover, the 210e's I see for sale are not cheap, making the CSR all the more appealing. If bought directly from Doug, I believe he ships it including one bus repeater. Needless to say, he is super awesome to deal with too.

PS: there is a CSR up for sale in Zürich, Switzerland via the Facebook Buchla Users Group (Official). Was listed 2 days ago.

Thanks for that, though I'm not on Facebook. I'll bide my time as it involves case expansion and such... Appreciate the heads-up though, and you've both convinced me to ignore the 210e.

Cool. It’s a good place to be.

If you send me a Modulargrid layout of your current system, I can tell you how powerful a CSR can be and/or if you actually would benefit from one. Post ‘er here and we can all play along.

The Studio.h CSR indeed always looked to me more attractive than a 210e. But I didn't swap the 210e for it, cause I'd miss the 8th audio input, even more than the 8th CV input.

Play away! Currently I'm without the 210/csr and have a tetramaps where the 250e is. Haven't decided what comes next as whatever happens I need to add an extra row in my case... (I'm currently full 18u)
