USB-C recording interface, anything out there?

Post by M_Johnson » Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:26 am

So recently I got a new MacBook to replace my aging one, as many may know it only has USB-C ports. I bought a dongle to get to USB2 or whatever. I can no longer use my FireWire recording interface, I have a Soundcraft mixer/interface that I bought mostly for live shows, I’m not so keen on the results I get using it as a recording interface. Then again maybe it’s just me. So what are the options(beside dongles) that anyone has been having luck with getting audio in and out of MacBooks?

The dongles are solid so I wouldn’t make a decision based on connectivity alone. Plenty of USB-Interfaces to choose from. If it needs to be USB-C, I can recommend Metric Halo. Have been using their interfaces for more than 15 years, hardware upgrades keep them up to date. Amazing support and performance.

Yeah the dongles are ok, just feel like it adds latency and a failure point. Maybe it’s all in my mind. I do appreciate the suggestion, will look into the Metric Halo interface.

Most/many manufacturers have adopted USB-C: focusrite, audient, MOTU, presonus, etc

They don’t add latency. If you don’t want to use an adapter, you can get a USB-C to Type B cable for direct connection.

I have a Metric Halo 2882 and have probably been using mine for at least 15 years too. I’m still using firewire but one of these days I’ll have to upgrade but I know I’ll be able to get a hardware upgrade for it.

I just got a Presonus Quantum 2626. It's TB3 and the latency is insane. In Live I set the buffer to 64 and it shows 1.65ms. This with a MBP16 (2019). I also have UAD Arrow, I got that just for some reverbs. It's also Thunderbolt 3.

using an RME fireface UC and havent noticed any latency but not all usb hubs are made alike - power can be an issue (even though the fireface is powered). i had a cheapo "VAVA" hub which was great until the hdmi stopped working.. a "hoo too" seems to be working fine now. ive used a usb c / usb c cable with a newish sapphire for my portable setup (no hubs) and sometimes i run a ssd drive direct usb c / usb c if im bouncing files or running multple libraries.

I grabbed a UAD Apollo 8x (T3) when I upgraded my studio machine to a Mac Mini last year, and I couldn't be happier. I was using an Apollo Twin MKII (T2) with a 2012 MBPro before that, and while that generation already sounded great, the upgraded DACs in the X series is noticeable. Honestly surprised me with the increase in clarity, depth, and soundstage. Highly recommended!

I recently got a Quantum 4848. Very happy with it. Quiet, clean, stable.

Can't go wrong with the Focusrite stuff! Plenty of USBC options there

the UA Arrow/Apollo Solo is fantastic and will run off thunderbolt without needing a power adapter

I use a FF800 with a Mcabook pro through 2 adapters:

Something like Thunderbolt 3 > Thunderbolt 2 > Firewire 800

Works a treat, I certainly don't notice any additional latency and It has never failed in years.

It's still just an electrical connection, no latency.

Thunderbolt adapters are active devices, so it's not just an electrical connection. I don't believe they add latency, however.

if you go to sweetwater.com and search for "USB C interface" a bunch of stuff comes up.. i'm sure you could do the same in google for wider search results.

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/search ... +interface

for example

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... -interface

I haven’t been on Mac since pre-Intel, but wanted an interface I could set up and then put away until I get a dedicated space set up again. The RME Babyface Pro FS I purchased can with both a USB A to B, and C to B cables.

I can see RME has troubleshooting areas under support for Mac, so while I can’t speak directly to its use in Mac OS, it appears to be supported.

Obviously not talking about Thunderbolt, round tripping the audio through Dante or using clairvoyants transcribing onto notepaper 8-)

Let me be clearer; if you have a machine with just USB-C sockets, you don't need to find a USB-C interface- you just use an appropriate cable or adaptor as you prefer. It is a simple electrical connection, there is no latency.

Never mind, I read the post above yours and thought the discussion had shifted to Thunderbolt adapters. :)
