Greatest electronic song ever.

Post by Voltcontrol » Thu Jul 30, 2020 4:23 am

Moments In Love by The Art Of Noise is the greatest electronic song ever.

Fight me.

Or rather:
What do you think are great examples of electronic songs/tracks that stand head and shoulders above all others?

When I was young I didn't have access to more than a few thousand tracks that I liked. Back then it was feasible for me to have absolute favourites. These days I'm so spoilt for choice that I can't pick a single track.

But based based on my perception 20 years ago I'd go with Mouse on Mars - Pinwheel Herman.
I made this techno remix of an ambient/downtempo track. 🧉

"Tocatta" by ELP ... the studio version from the album Brain Salad Surgery. A full blown synthesizer and Hammond assault on the senses.

The live version of the "Tarkus suite" by ELP. Again, synthesizer assault on your brain, especially part of the song "Mass".

"Cars" by Gary Numan. Phase shifted analog strings, plenty of synth bass and synth melody.

There is no ~one~ song for me ... that is like asking me which grain of sand I like best at the beach.

The one stuck up that pleasantly tingly place obviously.

i agree with Rex Coil that one song is a bit hard to call.
i think there are brilliant songs within styles, that stand head and shoulder above the rest though.

Dave Tipper is an absolute god amongst men....as are Sphongle., Current Value, El-B, Remarc, Venetian Snares, Mr Carmack, Shulman, Reso i could go on.

in 2020 - i still find Remarc's amens - absolutely ridiculously crisp...unreasonably crisp.

** Sunset Grill (Don Henley, 1984 I believe) .... absolutely excellent synth solo in the breakdown. Big huge strings in the chorus, lots of little tinklings and background atmosphere. Most folks have never heard the drum machine intro, either.

** Hollywood Town (Manfred Mann's Earth Band) ... another pycho-excellent synth solo during the breakdown, as well as all of the supporting synths throughout the song, lots of analog strings as well.

I haven’t heard Sunset Grill since I’ve been to Senõr Frogs or someplace similar.

Cretaceousear, that might actually be the only reasonable answer.

Somebody just beat me to it: ‘I feel love’. When that came out, I was convinced that relentless sequence was made with a ‘Mellotron’, because that name sounded to me as if it was a device that was going to make you crazy just listening to it.

And just for the heck of it: ‘Do the Mussolini’ by DAF.

I am amazed no one said "Autobahn", "Die Roboter/The robots" or "Das Model/The model" by Kraftwerk yet 8-) ...
... why buy it for $100 when you can build it yourself for $150?

Do the Mussolini is by Cabarete Voltaire, Der Mussolini is by DAF.

A "Darude - Sandstorm" seems most appropriate here

Not the best, if there even is a 'best' but the first track I remember as being 'electronic' rather than 'electric'
The 80s was a good time to be in Sheffield, great electronic music pumping out everywhere :)

Greatest electronic drone ever

Post by IanEye » Thu Jul 30, 2020 8:27 am

You may find it surprising to learn this is a solo performance on my homemade instrument, the Circon. It's sort of a precise Theremin, something you can play in exact tuning, although it still requires lots of practice. The Circon drives the Moog synth, which here provided those broad brassy sounds. The overlapping effect necessitated a very long tape delay which we accomplished by threading tape between two machines six feet apart. Clumsy, but it worked well when there were few good digital delays. Kubrick reassembled his own soundtrack for the film with audio engineers in London (I never learned what went where), and they used sections from an earlier, longer version of this piece heard as the family drives up the mountains to "The Overlook Hotel."
