Ableton Push 3

Post by ObsoleteModular »

Bam!

Well that came from nowhere ...

https://www.ableton.com/en/push/

Two versions, standalone with an Intel processor and 2.5 hour battery life, a normal version that can be upgraded with a kit later

Looks really well designed and MPE pads for $999 seems nice - for the standalone, though, one TRS MIDI (booo ewwww) and only one set of CV/Gate (I think? I only see two jacks that would work) is a handicap if you wanted to make it the central sequencer for a range of hardware - you've got to add a MIDI interface and a DC coupled ADAT preamp could add CV... so $2k becomes 2,5-3 real quick.

In the video the Ableton guy explains the engineers struggled to cram a computer, hard drive and battery into the same form factor so I guess no room for extra ports. But yeah, the more IO the better. Still ADAT's a nice surprise.

Looks like basically the same thing as the Push 2 with a few improvements, MPE and standalone operation. I'll happily keep my Push 2, but I can see how this is useful for many people.

Massive upgrade to the pads!

They respond to X and Y movement and you can do slides and pitch bends etc across them. Full MPE hardware implementation!

Having read nothing about it, it looks like they just changed the name to Push 3.

Didn’t like Push 2 and sold it. Too much rubber button and not enough screen. If they’d made it 50/50 I might have reinvested.

I like my Push 2 but find it a useful addition to DAW, keyboard and mouse, rather than a replacement.

Not having to take a laptop out to do a live set is super appealing though.

Sold it, too. Too much weird rubber feeling buttons that were difficult to press reliably.

Anyway - really paying a premium for 'standalone', as a full blown windows 11 laptop with the exact same processor, memory, HD size is just over $300 and would pair nicely with the regular push 3.

Normal Push 3 is a fantastic news : new pads, brings MPE to the table. Some cv/gate.
AND
Push 2 used price will be lower.

I can see why the design hasn't changed much : it just works.

Stand-alone with adat option and an Es-3 would be a nice system for live modular integration

So it wasn't just me. Those rubber buttons that had to be pressed til they indented were farkin turble.

The pads are absurdly oversized and yeah, the rubber buttons that wear away in a few months of use. Nope

Argh. I kind of locked into my Maschine+ now, but this is what I wanted for a long time.

I’ll have to watch more videos, as the lack of arranger editing is odd, but wow. Running any Ableton plug-in with M4L compatibility is crazy.

I have a lot of trouble understanding how people find a standalone Ableton on such a tiny screen to be an ok experience.
I love my push 2 but damn if i was to rely solely on its display i would completely lose it...

According to Loopop the rubberized plastic finish is gone... so that's progress.

This is the last thing my bank account needed to be released today.

I always dreamed of a stand-alone Push. Well, here she is.

What you don't want to stay in clip view, throwing Jesus arms after changing the drum pattern? Sounds like you might be some sort of terrorist.

Arrangement view without a keyboard and mouse would be pretty clunky. I’m sure you can just open your push 3 project on your computer and drag the session to arrangement view when you’re done.
