Synths with sine VCO or DCO

Post by IR »

I'm curious about this. I have a Trax Retrowave and I really like it, it's kind of big though. It can be done with modules of course, but curious what other synths have this feature. I know the Erebus 3 does also.

Buchla Command

MatrixBrute too but it's much bigger
And of course, self-resonating filters can be sines, but I'm guessing you know that!

Yup, actually have a filter module that can be used for that expressly., but I was curious about stand-alone synths, really more for curiosity than need.

Yamaha CS-20m, CS-40m, CS-70m (sine from oscillator 1 bypass filters and goes direct to VCA with independent level, which is great for use with BPF and HPF

??? I guess you are counting the filter? Monopoly has tri, saw, square, and pulse

Behringer 2600 and SE Boomstar offer sine (osc 2/3 on the barp, osc 1 on the boomstar)

You're right of course. I was just remembering back in the day when I had the OG how soft and pure they were....

Great q. I'm a fellow Sine wave enjoyer, stayed up many a night wondering why they aren't more commonly found on synths

Off top that haven't been mentioned:

Jupiter 8
Bass station ii
PreenFM 2 + 3
Minilogue xd (import wave)

Roland SH2 has sine on one of the oscillators, that works great for low end: reinforcing other osc when doing pwm or saw, or as standalone sine bass. what i like about it, its not mathematically perfect (an ideal that is more relevant for fm), but has very subtle fuzziness, which you can easily notice when moving the filter. however for sine leads i.e. higher freq range, i do prefer the tone of its filter in self oscillation.

another example, where sine has subtle harmonics, is JP-8. love doing bass and arpeggio sounds by layering triangle and sine on two oscillators, tuned close, with no filtering. you get a very thick, powerful tone.

My Minibrute also has it, but on the sub-oscillator, which is a pain because I want to layer it one octave higher than the main wave. But I can pitch the keyboard high and play it (so it is usable by itself). I think the Minibrute 2 might have a more sophisticated version.

Interesting, I'll have to check that out, because I have that one as well, but haven't used it much and haven't tried pitching it high. For what I want the sequencer won't be of much use.

Minibrute 2S has sine on the second VCO, which can be pitched an octave below and above the main osc.

Good luck! Hopefully it will help you get where you're going (even if you end up going somewhere unintentionally)! :tu:

No but with the shape mod it certainly sounds like you get a sine fully clockwise on the triangle , any way that’s what I use for a sub , haven’t played with it in higher octaves though.

Yeah scrub that , further up it’s no good, it self Rez filter or wave my bad

Probably the rarest synth I have owned: Orgon Enigizer. It has the nifty feature of letting in a sine after the filter section. Very practical for bass sounds, that you can always dial in some fundamental.

Yes, I would add that the Buchla Easel seems to me to be the most desirable, and the East Beast the most affordable :)

Also, off topic but somewhat related, I wonder if anyone has been able to judge the quality of the 2hp sine? (There's not really a topic on this module) ;)

Apparently there was one rare Czech synth that had a 1' sine wave oscillator that could be added, besides the other two oscillators.

It looks like both versions of the Erica Synths Syntrix have a sine wave on the first oscillator.
