Chompi sampler

Post by Voltcontrol »

A daisy based keyboard sampler.
Tad on the expensive side imho, but a cute, immediate, little box of fun and most likely a thing for some of us.

I watched that one a couple of days ago. It’s cute and cool but I won’t do Kickstarter campaigns. I asked them to notify me if and when there is stock.

I really like the intended workflow behind this. Definitely disappointed by even the kickstarter price though. I would think this could be done for around 300-400 dollars.

I can echo sentiments , I’d love a new cheap sk-1 fun thing , but the current price takes the fun out of it. It does look well built, but it feels like paying more for less at the moment.
If it is worth the price they need to explain why I’d buy this over other samplers at the same price that do way more.
I don’t mind concentrated basic feature , but I don’t want to pay that much for a device for that premise.

I'd want this as a Volca tbh.. Totally get that the hardware, current cost of manufacturing (+expected sales figure) and small company setup lead to a totally different pricepoint.

at this point I refuse to do anything Kickstarter. Hopefully it will be enough of a success to manufacture and sell through normal channels.

I don't really get it. This is priced like an Organelle, with the form factor being really close, too. Organelle sports a much more powerful processor and a much easier way for users to create their own patches visually with Pure Data. But you don't have to, Orhack makes it a fully capable 4-track groovebox with per-track send FX, master FX, modulation, sequencing, etc. Don't want a grooverbox? For a sample mangler with a huge sound, install Snowgrains and enjoy.

And if you're like "dude, all this is way too hard to use" then let me suggest a Circuit Rhythm for $300 or a Pocket Operator for $99. Better yet, Koala Sampler for the iPad is $5.
Out now, a six track EP showcasing Polyend Medusa's digital FM:

I mean, those aren't bad suggestions, but they won't look as cool on Insta with some succulents, a cat and some boilerplate about your "journey". It's a lifestyle toy. I'm sure it will appeal to a certain creepy babytalk-addicted poster here, who can't resist such things, but hardened cynics like you? Not so much.

That said, people should do them. If they like the look of this and can afford it, that's between them and their wallet. It's probably a fun device, price aside- and maybe has a use for people who want a small sprinkling of easily portable sampling without having to fret over details. If it actually gets made, I can see quite a few being resold relatively quickly, though- just by dint of the market segment that it appears to target.

Protip: Encourage lyfestyle Digitakt owners to sell theirs to get this. Digitakt isn't even new, and the colours are so boring! They've fixed most of the glaring omissions that made the Digitakt a crashing disappointment now, so it's approaching awesome. Socially engineer your way into a bargain

I think it is cool and the price is ok for a new boutique company. Wasn't the Korg microSampler like $400 new? And seems to be holding its own on Reverb.

My 9yo kid would absolutely love the Chompi but I haven't decided yet if it would be a "novelty" item or actually useful in the long term.

Oh man, the microSampler, I love how it looks like an industrial heating controller of some kind:

There was another new and quirky looking small sampler keyboard being PRed recently too.. I forget, will edit in if I find it. Seems like a bit of a keyboard sampler mini-renaissance.

Edit:

Found it, this looks fun:

Both the Microsampler and the Chompi look like those weird Midjourney synths I’ve been seeing a lot of lately. That’s not a complaint.

Definitely. For me the idea evokes memories of cheap and inspiring toy instruments and then completely ruins the fun with the price.

yep

instead, this one was inspired by the Casio SK1 and the manufacturer said the price will be between $600 and 800 (maybe euros since it´s european)

Chompi looks like fun but I think it should be bigger with more features for that price. Think their choice of buttons and dials is good though.

Make one yourself if you think you can do it for cheaper. And if you can’t, how do you expect him to?

Cirklon meets Fisher-Price is an interesting cosmetic choice.

This seems like the perfect easy to use sampler that was requested by many for years.
The price is fine. But not for the Behrcrowd , for them everything is too expensive. Now stop whining pleas thank you!

I got a lot of use out of the Casio VL Tone some 4 decades ago. I've been eyeing used versions on Reverb. This looks pretty nice, tough choice, sampler or Le Creuset cookware? It does look easy, an often underrated feature. I'm old, lazy and booked to the gills, so it's especially important to me.
