Roland SP 404 Mk 2

We don't want to conquer space at all. We want to expand Earth endlessly. We don't want other worlds; we want a mirror.

There has been a few versions in between (A and X I believe), but I still have and keep the OG version (the silver one).

I saw it and am quite tempted to get one when it comes out ... I always liked the form factor and this seems to be a big step up from the latest model.
On the other hand, the 1010 Blackbox seems to offer more for about the same price, but the touchscreen user interface is not as attractive to me as the buttons on the 404.

I'm surprised they used the same "404" name given the number of new features.

Yep kinda loved the Roland sp series for different reasons. Sp808ex was my first bit of gear , but I should of gone with the su700. Had a boss sp505 always wanted a 404.
Likely get this one.

The SU700! I would have liked to try one, but I always had the suspicion that it wasn't the best tool for live use, I mean doing a whole set changing patterns in real time and that sort of thing.

I also had a SP-505 and hated it. The slow screen response when switching functions (with progress bar!) And the fact that you have to stop the sequencer for things like adjusting the sample levels killed me.
I sold my SP-303 got the 505 as an upgrade, and for some things it was, like a lot more sample locations, memory, and better sequencer, but it doesn't have the immediacy of the 303 for most functions.

Yeah sp505 was slow with smartmedia card and yes the processor was tedious, but the sequencer was quite cool. The sp808ex had the best effects out of the line , but my mc707 feeds that need.
Tbh I have phrase sampler needs more than covered , but the 404 looks so fun and immediate. I read the manual once , and in true Roland fashion, there are some ‘wtf’ moments, but seems like they have addressed some.

I fully expect this one to be a love hate relationship , where as the mc707 I just love.

I’m a little sad they took out the D-Beam. I have fond memories of using it on the SP-555.

I didn't like playing the touchscreen on Blackbox. I'd never used one before, and that was good to learn. And iPad apps for sample playing don't work for me, for the same reason. Screens are good for a lot of things I do, but not playing samples.

SP404 Mk2 seems like an instrument I'd enjoy. And it's got a *sound*, too. I'm thinking I'd like to run whole tracks through after mixing. Previous iterations looked like they fell a bit short on functionality (for what I'd want to do).

I'd use it with OP-1 - i reckon they'd complement each other. OP-1 for drums and melodies -> SP404 for arrangement and processing.

I have too many samplers and I have some fairly comprehensive samplers too, but I am really tempted by this iteration of the SP404. I think the autochop feature where you can play a long sample on one pad and then select the slice point you want to carry the sample forward to the next pad, just by pressing the next pad in the series, is a very cool feature.
It's been a long time since someone wrote a really good book in jail.

Haha this will give most syn-tubers some nice content! I dig the look and will be looking at it mostly as a poor man’s octatrack kinda standpoint.

I'm excited. I still have some to explore on my 404 SX, but any gripe I had they have taken care of. Particularly the polyphony on resampling, as well as being able to resample patterns, and oh yeah 4 effects at once. It seems like a really, really complete unit compared to the predecessors. I'd be happy to have it alongside my SX.

Never wanted a 404 before, but this is tempting me. My issue is that both of my hardware samplers (Akai Force and Octatrack) are very complex and don’t have the most ‘immediate’ workflow.

Also considering the Blackbox. I would like the granular capabilities but theres not nearly enough effects on it.

I’m also interested in some more detailed comparisons to the Blackbox

This one has batteries. I like the blackbox but that one thing makes this a win over it. This one also has a class compliant 2-in, 4-out usb audio interface. You can plug it straight into a laptop, and run tracks/clips into it, add effects, and back into your DAW.

Also has midi out (with velocity sensitivity) on the pads, and while not stated explicitly, I assume will eventually on the knobs as well...could be useful in a limited context.

Not that we should turn this into a VS thread, but in its favor the Blackbox does have more outputs, an analog clock input and output, and can do odd time signatures and polyrhythms.

I was tempted by the SP-404A, but the lack of waveform display put me off a little.

I would like one of the reviewers to put the SP-404 mkII through its paces as a properly seamless looper (i.e. with continuous overdub), but I am going to continue to take an interest in the release of the SP-404 mkII on the assumption it has everything the SP-404A does (which does have what I am looking for in a looper but lacks waveform display).

So, basically, this ...

with no sequencer idk how this supplements modular. or with very basic seq lets say. i would better grab octatrack mk1 than this one for aprox same amount. but its an improvement over other versions 4 sure

Just no STEP sequencer. And no production machines, yet...so that may be added to software before general release. The price is right.

I don't have *any* sampler...I've been using R2R, but this might be a good thing to mess with my workflow. I've almost pulled the trigger on Deluge a few times, but big grids of blinky pads aren't my thing. This looks more manageable to me.

Also, it uses SD cards...that suits me!

It seems like there are both blue and white OLED versions?

Anyone know if this will work as a usb midi controller?
I understand that's not the main idea, but it's not impossible to do and would make it a lock for me...
