Gotharman's Urano - modular groove box and Eurorack companion :)

Post by flx » Tue Jul 20, 2021 1:19 am

It’s out! Gotharman’s latest virtual modular synth in a box! Now with even more (non-virtual) inputs and outputs!

:cloud: https://www.gotharman.dk/urano.htm :cloud:

2516BF57-7D28-4E66-83E9-563367443BEA.jpeg

- 8 Oscillators. Waveforms, noise, drum oscillators, samplings, wavetables.
-Up to 4 analog filters. Compatible with the Gotharman filter board system.
-8 digital filters with 27 filter types. Standard filters, triple filters, sharp filters, tube filters...
-8 VCA's with ADSR envelope, various curves and a clip parameter. Can be trigged by any source.
-8 Effects Processors. Many of the LD effects plus a new reverb, a wavefolder and some new pitch effects.
-8 LFO's. With variable waveform and curve. Key syncable.
-8 Envelopes. ADSR + decay envelope with loop options. Can be trigged by any source.
-5 Random Generators.
-4 Ring VCA's.
-2 Mixer modules, that can add extra inputs to any module.
-Output module. Sends up to 8 sources to the outputs, and handles the stereo panning.
-Trigger Input module. Assign the trigger inputs to parts and sequencer functions.
-Trigger Output module. Sends any sources to the trigger outputs.
-CV Output module. Send any sources to the CV outputs. Can scale to 1V/oct and 1.2V/oct.

Everything can be connected. There is no differentiation between audio and modulation signals (like it was on the predecessor, Gotharman’s anAmoNo X).

New stuff:
- Several new FX, including a higher quality reverb
- Wavetable editor! You can now draw waveforms on the touchscreen and use them as oscillators.
- 2x line audio inputs and 2x Eurorack level audio inputs
- More convenient module connection via two manual ways and one automatic way.

Upgrades:
- Up to 193 minutes of always-available sample memory (no loading samples into RAM!)
- Blue LEDs
- Up to four (4!) Gotharman analog filters! Two physical filter board slots, but new dual-line boards will be released (we’ve seen one of those for the Tiny LD mkII already)

- - - - Original Post:

For a while Gotharman has been posting teaser videos of a new prototype on his YouTube channel and I think we haven't talked about them here on Modwiggler yet. So let's do that

The prototype first appeared in this SpazeDrum demo here:

Then there were two spring reverb videos:

And one about modular synthesis:

One about sampling:

And finally this one a few days ago, where we see a lot more of the device:

What we can deduct from the official videos and their YouTube descriptions and comments so far:

- A modular synthesizer in a box with various building blocks like VCOs, Filters, ENVs, LFOs, etc.
- Sampling and sample playback
- Extensive connectivity via 3.5mm jacks to send and receive audio and CV!
- A real analog Accutronics spring reverb tank not anymore, but a new digital reverb effect
- Bigger, 16:9 touch screen
- Eight voices, maybe even polyphonic like the LD3 (you can see the LD3 voice bars on the screen in the last video)
- Maybe more new effects? There was a Wavefolder video posted a while ago (just speculation of course)
- Gotharman is "pretty sure" that it will be available this year :yay:

I suppose that’s pretty much what it will be. Not exactly like the Anamono X, but a current-generation Gotharman modular synth and external modular synth companion box :yay:

I'm excited about it. It looks like some of the modules are mixers. I'd love to use them to set up audio and cv feedback loops on this machine.

The modular flexibility coupled with the Gotharman morphing paradigm (which i hope is still on board! ) would be super powerful and exciting. And again, as in his other instruments, the interface seems very clear and navigable, although I'd love to see more about how you set up routings. The bigger screen is great.

I think he says in a comment that the reverb is digital, and that the spring reverb idea was dropped. I think the new digital reverb sounds really good.

What are other people thinking or wondering about this?

Since I have an LD3 I’m hoping it will be very different.

According to gotharman.dk the company is on holidays until 8 August. Maybe he'll join the conversation after that.

How much poly? How many voices? How complex can a patch be? Nord Modular style?

We don’t know yet. But it appears to have 8 voices and thus it may possibly be 8-voice polyphonic too. It’s not a patching system like the Nord Modular. I don’t think there will be a computer editor. You have the typical modules (VCO, VCA, VCF, FX, etc) which each appear to have multiple inputs. So you could for example send a mix of VCO 1, VCO 2 and FX1 into a VCF. As on the other Gotharman instruments (particularly the predecessor anAmoNo X), you will also be able to choose from lots of signals for parameter modulation (external CV, LFOs, sequencers, probably even audio).

Haha Flemming you’re such a wizard. Curious to learn more about this machine. Will it play samples? Are there room for filter boards?

All other Gotharman instruments do, so I suppose that this one will record and play back samples as well - specifically as it apparently has been designed as a deeper Eurorack/modular companion device with 3.5mm audio inputs and outputs. It also has a USB port, which was used for sample import & export in the past.

In the menu you can see DGF and VCF modules, which have been the nomenclature for digital filters and analog filters in the past, so I would also assume that filter boards will be compatible. Would make sense, because Gotharman released a new filter board and also the specs for DIY boards recently and the swappable boards have been a fun and proven customization system (in my opinion). The Urano also seems to be a little larger than the LD3 (to get those 3.5mm sockets on the front panel, I assume), so there probably would be the space for filter boards too.

But yeah, that’s all only wild speculation here on my part :D

I watched the above demo video again and the Urano’s patching appears to work similarly as the anAmoNo X, which was the previous generation’s modular synth. It had fewer CV inputs and outputs, only 4 voices and fewer “modules” as it seems. But judging from the video, the Urano takes the anAmoNo X’s concept of module inputs for patching. Each module (VCF, DGF, FX, VCA, etc.) has several inputs with attenuators (see the screen in the video at 1:07). So you could for example send a mix of VCO1, VCO2 and FX1 into a VCF. Then you could send a mix of the VCF output, VCO3 and FX1 (again) into a VCA, etc. This was very cool and versatile on the anAmoNo X.

EDIT: … and I just read the comments under the video. The “audio output” module will have 8 inputs and the other modules (VCF, FX, etc.) will have 3 inputs each. There are also mixer modules, which can upgrade a module to 7 inputs!

Flx thanks for your comments. in the anamonoX, could you freely create audio and cv feedback loops?

Depends what you mean by “freely”. You could definitely create audio feedback loops as I described (e.g. VCF out to FX in, FX out to VCF in). Modulation feedback was only somewhat possible, because the AnaX didn’t have modulation signal mixers, only two 2-input VCAs that accepted both audio and modulation. So modulation signal mixing/routing was limited and worked basically just like in the LD3/TinyLD, where you have modulation targets (e.g. Filter Cutoff), for which you can choose a modulation source. However, since the Urano appears to have those mixer modules now, I’d assume that on this machine you will be able to route modulation signals “more freely”.

Flx thanks for your comment. I'm interested in mixing and routing modulation signals too. Looks like a very powerful machine.

It seems like the Urano is aiming for a combination of powerful modules, flexible linking and routing, AND a clear interface, in a self contained machine (which can still interface with the outside world via MIDI in/out, audio in/outs and CV in/outs). It's not trying to be a Nord Modular, where you need a computer to edit your patches. It's a self contained instrument.

Gotharman instruments have a lot of amazing qualities, but I think the ability to combine complexity and clarity is what I admire about them the most. From what we've seen, the new machine seems to continue that. Looking forward to hearing more.
