Running Out of USB Ports. HELP!

Post by peachesandbacon » Tue Jun 08, 2021 11:39 am

So I'm running out of USB ports.
I've currently got:

Digitone
Digitakt
Midi Fighter
TR8-S
ES-8
Keystep
Mouse
Keyboard
USB to MIDI Box that goes to a MIDI to CV module.
External Hard Drive

That's 10 fricken USB connections.
the back of my iMac has 4 ports and I use one of these Mbeat powered hubs too.
https://www.mwave.com.au/product/mbeat- ... 20-aa00444

However the hub doesn't like everything I put in it, the elektron boxes don't get detected when they go into the hub for example, and same for the ES8 usb connection, so I only lets me use 4 things at once, despite it having 7 ports and it being powered from the mains. So I end up having to hotswap things in and out when I'm using them, which is less than ideal.

Is this a bandwidth issue or a power issue?

HELP.
What is the answer here?

Is there some industry standard MEGA usb hub that will JUST WORK with everything I throw at it?
I'm losing my mind a little bit over here, and I just want to fix this.

This doesn't necessarily solve your problem, but I got this Sabrent USB extender/hub for the front of my iMac and it's great for shit you just need to plug in temporarily - like a phone or a CF card reader or whatever: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sabrent/HBIMCU/

Thanks Magicube.
Yeah, ideally I want something to hide around the back to keep cable clutter to a minimum.

Comeon guys, 100 views of this post and not one of you have this problem?

What about acquiring an additional hub? That might distribute things a little more evenly. Also fwiw I use an older wired Mac keyboard with USB ports, which isn't good for power but I can plug my mouse dongle right into it, works like a charm and keeps a port free. Or, maybe go Bluetooth for the keyboard and/or mouse? Not sure if any of this helps your situation but good luck to you regardless.

How about a USB expansion PCI card? That would probably solve the problem of devices that don't like hubs.
Add 4 or 5 USB 3 ports for around $50-75, about the cost of a hub that won't improve too much.

But if it's a notebook or a Mac, sorry, not much help.

Powered hubs are what you need. They're harder to find and cost a bit more, but you need one that will plug into the wall so it can better power all the devices going to it. I had nothing but problems until I went to a powered USB hub. Ended up doing one of the Sabrents and bought the additional power supply for it. All of my issues with picky devices cleared right up.

I have the same one and it works well for me, though I’m not sure I have as many devices as the OP :-)

I bought one of these for my rack and it works very well. I only put synths into it. All other USB devices go into a separate powered USB hub.

I work in film post and frequently advise people on this. Anything mission critical 100% should be on a powered USB hub. Bus powered devices, although temporarily more convenient, are a recipe for disaster. I've seen several heat up and then either lose performance or die.

A good powered USB or Thunderbolt hub is worth every penny.

I’m also using the same powered Anker USB hub mentioned above and also will vouch for it. Much better speed and reliability relative to the unpowered device I used before.

I use this, a few years now, no issues whatsoever on both PC and Mac platforms.

OP's hub is powered already - is it not enough power?

You can get a PCI breakout box for a Mac. I have one for my iMac that connects via Thunderbolt and use it for my PCI RME HDSP. I had moved from a Mac tower to the iMac and was glad to be able to just move the RME over. I'd put a USB card in there, too, but I got the two-slot version specifically for the RME. Great idea, though!
