Oscilloscope for 5U and MOTM

Post by DrReverendSeance » Sun Aug 02, 2020 9:02 am

Hi everyone,

My bench-top oscilloscope broke down and before I find or build a new one I was curious to see what others are doing in 5U to visualize their waves.

I am tempted to free up some space on my table by getting a handheld, although part of me is also tempted to find an oscilloscope module like I’ve seen in euro....

Some DIY oscilloscope modules I’ve found on the web: So what are your experiences with module oscilloscopes? Or with handhelds? Any specific brands or options to recommend? What features should I look for?

Additional notes for context:
My system is all in MOTM format. I’ve built BNC to 1/4” cables to facilitate using the oscilloscope.

I built a nice little cheapo unit based on the dso138 kit.
IMG_8497.JPG
It's not a highly precise or fast unit, really only useful for visualizing waveforms. But it's nice eye candy. I've got lots of other scopes for "business" use.

I'm working on one for 4U, (that could be instantly adapted to 5U). 2" x 2" OLED (or possibly VFD, we haven't quite decided yet). VFDs are noisy, but so cool. Anyway, it's a little while off, because it's a collaboration and I'm lucky to get the time I get from the person helping me. Just thought I'd mention it.

Another option though, is since 5U is such a spacious format, (Edit: just saw the one above this... ) one could pick up a fairly inexpensive scope, gut it, and make an FPD panel. The problem with some of the cheap scopes is the rate.

The one ting missing from many of the 'cheapies' -like sduck's DSO138 above- is XY capability. Considering how often that's useful with synths, it's somthing to look for. JYEtech, the person behind the DSO series Was making an XY capable version a year or two ago which may by now be out in the wild.

The DSO138 does most of what is needed -except XY- which I wish were more prevalent in the 'convertible' lower-end digital scopes.

Would love to hear otherwise. That there's a reasonably priced decent XY capable scope that will fit behind 15HP. I'd get a mordax Data but it's too wide.
edit:
JYE does indeed have the XY capability in the WAVE-2 kit and assembled pocket scope. 0nly 79USD too. 320x240 Touch panel<-- This may be good or not-so-good,depending on how's it's been done. /edit

@J3rk
Will your planned scope fit behind a 15HP panel?

Mine will have X/Y. Reason being I’m a sucker for dual-indexed sine plotting :cloud:

It’s either going to be 2x2 or 3x3 for the screen (I just haven’t found a square one that big yet). The PCB will be as small as possible though. It is possible that we could make it so screen is interchangeable to make it fit different sizes of panel. I’ll mention that the next time I talk to the person helping me.

It would be nice if it could fit more formats. Frac and Euro would be nice.

Thanks for the quick reply. Screen of 2.4 or even 2.6" width would be ideal. But usually those have backing PCBs wider than 15HP.

The other thing that seems a bit behind the curve considering cell phones and other tech is the limited pixels in these oscope displays. Only 320x240 in 2.4 inches?? Can't we do better than that at this point?

Has anyone investigated the Eurorack O-Scope module DATA?

Seriously good and I sure wish it was in 5U

For a while, Doug/SSL was doing conversions of Jones O'Scopes to MU. Maybe if enough people were interested, he'd do some more.

This should really be a thing. I don't think it would fit behind a 2U MOTM style panel, but would be no problem with a 2MU panel. I have both an O'toole, and the Data, and there's really no comparison - I basically don't use the O'toole.

Agreed sduck. I've an o'Tool+ and have not even looked at it since the DATA was added. I'm working on something and will report back!

Thank you for all the replies. I am very interested in seeing what J3RK and dslocum (and Faustgeist?) are working on! I am definitely interested in purchasing such a module if it comes out (in MOTM format ideally but I can figure around it if not).

I broke down and added Euro to my MOTM system (mostly to keep up with Paul's Synthtech modules within my space constraints) so I added a Data. I love it and use it regularly. The extra doodads like the highly controllable voltage/wave outputs are very useful. Here's what my setup looks like http://stevepur.com/music/synths/index.html
The instrument is not the music.

I use a DSC-5300 bench scope. I like to take measurements.

This was the best XY I ever owned. Beautiful fun with a PAIA SVF.

In another thread I suggested that this^ was probably the JYE Wave 2. Which I think was confirmed in that thread. There is a re-panel kit for it for Euro as well.

I have my eyes on the Zeroscope. It's currently unavailable due to the WW chip shortage. And it's small and aimed at Euro. But it looks like an amazing device with a decent scope feature set. Not a re-panel or clone of something else either according to its maker in one of the MW DIY threads.

My hope is that it can be made with a larger display which would make it a nice option for 4 and 5U.

@SkyWriter
Nicest XY for me was an old Tek545A. 20" long CRT helps!
Great year round use too. Boat anchor in Summer and shop heater in the Winter! ;)

FWIW I have a cheapo Sinometer brand analog o'scvope next to my big modular for "video art" uses and occasional reality check debugging. I wouldn't recommend one for serious measurements but for occasional use or maybe an electronics student situation I think they are an OK gamble? (I've read a lot of people complaining about them because they are cheaply made, and they pretty much are!) Only $150 to $180 I think although they are getting scarce?

I've done several modifications to mine . . .I removed the gradical, made the tube opening larger, put feet on the side to stand it up vertically, swapped out the BNC jacks for 1/4" . . . . It's maybe a bit silly but serves my needs. I have better o'scopes for when I might need one.

Swapping out the BNC jacks is a good idea! I have a small fortune in adapter cables...wish I'd thought of that!

This popping up reminded how remiss I am sometimes. I have a few things that take precedence, but this is something I still want to build. I actually want to use a round automotive display to get the “vintage” look out of a digital solution. Need to get back to it :deadbanana:
