5U at SuperBooth 2021

Post by JohnLRice » Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:31 am

I'm not there, but I thought I'd start a thread for pictures and videos featuring 5U related gear.

I'm super curious to see the reveal of the new big module Moon has been teasing for a year! Gert just posted this on his Instagram . . .looks like they are going to be outside, or is he just joking? :hmm:

Yes, that's right !
Gert of MOON has been out in the wilderness too much on vacation (North Frisian Islands, North Denmark, ...)
and can't stand it inside for so long

So, it's true, MOON has its stand outside in the fresh air :yay: :yay:
sailing away with the first winds of the new day !

That M595 is a super high tech alternative to the M592 Reversible Modulation Matrix. Tempting!

It does look super impressive! While it's not something I would probably use, I wonder how much it will cost?! Looks to be 8 MU! I'll assume it will be priced somewhere in-between the 568 and 569 but maybe it will be less expensive than a 568? :despair: I do wish Gert had added MIDI input to control bank/patch changes . . . I suggested that to him a few years ago as an update to the 567 because it would be a big seller for folks who run integrated systems with software or hardware sequencers and even simple MIDI foot controllers that can send patch changes would be handy for live performances. Maybe he has MIDI on the back or will have a MIDI expander module? :spin: The PDF has some nice details, and it will even be available as a 19" rack mount version . . .I bet some pro audio studios and folks with huge keyboard or guitar rigs might be interested in that!

the Analog Delay looks like really good. Full of nice features (input volume, different filters and mixture of 1k and 4k chips).

Looking at the exhibitor list the only 5U manufacturers that will be there are Moon, Synth-Werk, and Moog, although I don't know if Moog will be showing any 5U or not.

NOT 5U . . . .yet? :hmm: :hihi:

Haken have introduced a eurorack module version of their EaganMatrix! A 5u conversion NEEDS to be done but just getting a small Eurorack case or one of those DotCom frame things would work fine. Pricy at $800 but this sound engine is a monster!
https://www.hakenaudio.com/eaganmatrix-module
EM_13.jpg
Haken Audio’s EaganMatrix Module offers:

Polyphony: Nominal 1, Maximum 8
Direct CV note control is limited to 1 voice at a time, but higher polyphony avoids voice stealing when EaganMatrix presets have long decays, and higher polyphony is often useful for Midi input.

4 Per-note CV Inputs: W, X, Y, Z

Gate (W) — Triggers at 1V, with max range -10V to +10V

Pitch (X) — 1V per octave, with programmable offset for Middle C

Timbre (Y) — Function depends on EaganMatrix preset; voltage ranges 0..5V, -5..+5V, or 0..10V, with programmable offset

Loudness (Z) — 0..5V, -5..+5V, or 0..10V, with programmable offset

4 Global CV Inputs: i, ii, iii, iv
Functionality depends on EaganMatrix preset; these CV affect all voices (notes from WXYZ and Midi); each global CV has selectable voltage range 0..5V, -5..+5V, or 0..10V, and programmable offset

2 Analog Audio Inputs: Left and Right, or Mono

2 Analog Audio Outputs: Left and Right, or Mono Sum
-12dB switch selects between Eurorack Level and Line Level

Midi over USB
Allows bidirectional MPE and MPE+ connection to other devices; allows connection to the Haken Editor for editing and archiving EaganMatrix presets (USB-A cable included with purchase)

Universal 3.5mm Midi In (Type A, Type B, and TS)
Allows connection to other Midi devices without need of computer or USB (adapter to 5-pin DIN Midi In included with purchase)

Type B 3.5mm Midi Out
Allows connection to other Midi devices without need of computer or USB (adapter to 5-pin DIN Midi Out included with purchase)

i2c Port for Communication to the Control Voltage Converter
(a switch selects between 3.5mm Midi Out and i2c functionality)

12 Switches, 1 Rotary, and LED Matrix
A menu system allows stand-alone operation without need of computer, and provides monitoring for notes being played and CV input levels

In this video at about 12:40 a gent from https://www.amazona.de/ stops by the Synth-Werk booth for a minute. All German language and he was just walking around saying "hi" as they were setting up so no demos. It looks like Gert from Moon wasn't at his booth at the time so he didn't stop.

The gent is Peter Grandl, founder of Amazona.de, on his first quick tour of the exhibition grounds or the outside area.

He meets Dieter Döpfer, among others, who still has to orient himself.

Mostly he asks the exhibitors what they think of this concept of "tents".

I think I can hear that it takes getting used to and that some have dust problems. But, owing to COVID (distance rules),
everyone is happy that the Superbooth exists and is having fun with it

Gert is a true successor of Bob Moog. Evolving 5U in a way that's true to its origins.
I love that the matrix is so bold and easy to use.

Here are some nice SuperBooth 2021 photos courtesy of Albin Meskes. For those that don't know, Albin is the incredible artist that does all of the awesome Moon Modular graphic design! :sb: :goo: :hail:

Most pictures have Gert Jalass of Moon Modular and/or Gerhard Mayrhofer of Synth-Werk.

595 prototype.
Note: I'm told that there are no current plans to sell it in this separate format, just the single 8 MU module and 19" rack versions. I would suggest writing to Gert at Moon and expressing your interest in the prototype style of separate modules if that is what you would want?
